Helpful advice before buying
TECSOUND SY50 performs best when used as part of a complete soundproofing build-up rather than as a single standalone layer. For the best results, it should usually be combined with suitable acoustic boards, insulation, resilient isolation products and acoustic sealant depending on the wall, floor or ceiling construction.
As with any soundproofing project, the final result depends on the full system, the existing structure and the quality of installation. Gaps, weak points, unsealed edges and flanking paths can all reduce performance, so careful fitting is important.

Suitable Surfaces
TECSOUND SY50 can be applied to a range of clean, dry and stable building surfaces. Common suitable surfaces include:
- Plasterboard
- Timber boards
- MDF
- Concrete
- Drywall and partition systems
- Bulkheads and ceiling linings
For best adhesion, the surface should be free from dust, grease, moisture, loose material and heavy texture before installation.
Acoustic Use
TECSOUND SY50 is primarily used to help reduce airborne noise. This includes sounds such as conversation, TV noise, music and general household noise transferring through a wall, floor or ceiling structure.
The membrane works by adding a dense, flexible acoustic layer into the build-up. This added mass can help reduce sound transmission when the product is installed correctly as part of a complete soundproofing system.
Common System Uses
- Behind plasterboard on party walls
- Within ceiling soundproofing systems
- As part of a floor soundproofing build-up
- On timber or board surfaces before an additional lining layer
- In home studios, offices, media rooms and residential refurbishments
- As an acoustic mass layer in commercial and hospitality projects
Important Performance Note
Soundproofing performance depends on the full construction, not just one individual product. The final result will be affected by the existing wall, floor or ceiling, the number of layers used, the quality of installation, and whether any gaps, joints or flanking paths are properly sealed.
For best results, TECSOUND SY50 is commonly combined with other acoustic materials such as acoustic plasterboard, mineral wool, resilient channels, furring channels, acoustic sealant and suitable floor or ceiling systems.
Handling Advice
TECSOUND SY50 is a high-mass product and can be heavy to handle, especially when installing overhead or working with larger sections. For ceiling installations or larger areas, we recommend working in pairs and cutting the membrane into manageable sections before fitting.
How to Install TECSOUND SY50 Self-Adhesive Acoustic Membrane
TECSOUND SY50, also known as Tecsound 50SY or Tecsound SY 50, is a self-adhesive acoustic membrane designed to reduce airborne noise transfer through walls, floors and ceilings. Its high-density, flexible construction makes it suitable for both DIY soundproofing projects and professional trade installations.
The self-adhesive backing makes installation cleaner and faster than non-adhesive membranes, but careful preparation and fitting are still important. For best results, the membrane should be applied to a clean, dry and stable surface with firm pressure across the full area.
What You’ll Need
- TECSOUND SY50 Self-Adhesive Acoustic Membrane
- Measuring tape
- Sharp Stanley knife or utility blade
- Straight edge or metal ruler
- Hand roller or floor roller
- Gloves for handling
- Acoustic sealant for edges and gaps
- Acoustic putty pads for socket boxes, if required
- Tecsound jointing tape or suitable acoustic tape, if required
Before You Start
Allow the membrane to acclimatise in the room for around 24 hours before installation where possible. This helps the material settle to the room temperature and makes it easier to handle.
TECSOUND SY50 is a high-mass product, so it can feel heavy when working with large sections. For ceilings, overhead work or larger areas, we recommend working in pairs and pre-cutting the membrane into manageable pieces.
Step 1: Prepare the Surface
Before applying the membrane, make sure the surface is properly prepared. The surface should be:
- Clean — remove dust, dirt, grease, loose paint and loose particles.
- Dry — do not apply to damp or wet surfaces.
- Smooth and stable — fill cracks, gaps or uneven areas before fitting.
- Structurally sound — avoid applying to weak, crumbling or unstable surfaces.
TECSOUND SY50 can be applied to suitable surfaces such as plasterboard, concrete, timber, MDF and other stable construction boards. Good surface preparation is important because dust, moisture or loose material can reduce adhesion.
Step 2: Measure and Cut the Membrane
- Measure the area where the membrane will be fitted.
- Mark the required size on the membrane.
- Use a sharp Stanley knife or utility blade with a straight edge to cut the membrane neatly.
- Cut pieces carefully to reduce gaps and waste.
For best coverage, allow a small overlap of approximately 5mm to 10mm where sheets meet. If you are working on a ceiling, cut smaller sections so they are easier to lift, position and press into place.
Step 3: Apply the Membrane
- Start from one corner of the installation area.
- Peel back a small section of the protective backing.
- Align the exposed adhesive section with the surface.
- Press it firmly into position.
- Gradually peel away more of the backing while smoothing the membrane onto the surface.
- Use a hand roller, floor roller or firm hand pressure to bond the membrane fully to the surface.
Work slowly and methodically. Avoid trapping air behind the membrane and make sure the sheet is fully pressed down across the whole area. The better the contact between the membrane and the surface, the better the finished installation will be.
Step 4: Overlap and Seal the Joints
Where two sheets meet, overlap them by around 5mm to 10mm where possible. Press the overlap firmly to create a close-fitting joint.
For improved airtightness, joints can be reinforced with Tecsound jointing tape or a suitable acoustic tape. This is especially useful where the membrane is being used as part of a higher-performance wall, ceiling or floor system.
Step 5: Trim Edges and Openings
Once the membrane is fitted, trim any excess material around edges, corners, sockets, pipes or openings using a sharp blade.
Pay close attention to weak points. Sound can pass through small gaps, so edges and penetrations should be sealed carefully. Use acoustic sealant around perimeter edges and any small gaps. Where electrical sockets are present, use acoustic putty pads to help reduce sound leakage through the socket boxes.
Step 6: Add the Next Layer
After TECSOUND SY50 has been installed, it can be covered with the next layer of the soundproofing system. Depending on the project, this may include:
- Acoustic plasterboard
- Standard plasterboard
- MDF or timber board
- Floating floor layers
- Resilient bar or furring channel systems
- Acoustic mineral wool within the cavity
TECSOUND SY50 performs best as part of a complete system. For example, wall and ceiling systems often combine acoustic membrane, acoustic insulation, plasterboard layers and acoustic sealant to reduce airborne noise transfer.
Installation Tips
- Do not rush the surface preparation — clean, dry surfaces help the adhesive bond properly.
- Use sharp blades — this gives cleaner cuts and makes fitting easier.
- Work in pairs where needed — especially for ceilings and large sections.
- Apply firm pressure — use a roller to reduce air pockets and improve adhesion.
- Avoid gaps — soundproofing works best when the coverage is continuous.
- Seal edges and penetrations — small gaps can reduce the overall acoustic result.
Important Soundproofing Note
Soundproofing is only as strong as the full system. TECSOUND SY50 adds useful acoustic mass, but the final result depends on the existing structure, the full build-up, the installation quality and how well gaps and flanking paths are controlled.
