8.5mm DBx PRO Acoustic Board

8.5mm DBx PRO Acoustic Board is a slim, high-performance soundproofing board designed to improve acoustic performance in walls, floors and ceilings. Measuring 1200mm x 800mm x 8.5mm, each board covers 0.96m² and provides a very thin acoustic layer for domestic, commercial and trade soundproofing projects.

DBx PRO boards use a dense sand-filled corrugated board construction to help reduce sound transfer through walls, floors and ceilings. The 8.5mm version is the slimmest DBx PRO board option, making it especially useful where space is limited but acoustic improvement is still required.

What is 8.5mm DBx PRO Acoustic Board used for?

8.5mm DBx PRO Acoustic Board is used as part of wall, floor and ceiling soundproofing systems where a very slim acoustic board layer is needed.

It is commonly used for party wall upgrades, timber floor soundproofing, ceiling soundproofing, home offices, bedrooms, studios, media rooms, flats, apartments, commercial spaces and refurbishment projects where available build-up depth is limited.

How does DBx PRO Acoustic Board work?

DBx PRO works by adding a dense acoustic board layer to the structure. The sand-filled core helps dissipate sound energy and add acoustic mass, while the board format makes it practical to install on walls, floors and ceilings.

In walls and ceilings, DBx PRO is commonly used with resilient bars, furring channels, acoustic plasterboard, acoustic mineral wool and acoustic sealant. In floors, it can be installed as a floating acoustic board layer beneath suitable floor finishes.

What type of noise does DBx PRO help reduce?

8.5mm DBx PRO Acoustic Board can help reduce both airborne noise and impact noise when used as part of the correct system.

Airborne noise includes voices, TV noise, music, traffic noise and general room-to-room sound transfer. Impact noise includes footsteps, dropped items, furniture movement and vibration through floor structures.

The final result will depend on the existing structure, board layout, fixing method, surrounding materials, sealing detail and whether flanking noise paths are treated.

Where can 8.5mm DBx PRO Acoustic Board be used?

8.5mm DBx PRO Acoustic Board is suitable for a range of acoustic applications, including:

  • Party wall soundproofing
  • Stud wall upgrades
  • Brick and block wall upgrades
  • Floor soundproofing systems
  • Ceiling soundproofing systems
  • Music rooms and rehearsal spaces
  • Studios and cinema rooms
  • Bedrooms, living rooms and home offices
  • Flats, apartments and residential refurbishments
  • Commercial walls, floors and ceilings

Why choose 8.5mm DBx PRO Acoustic Board?

8.5mm DBx PRO is useful where acoustic improvement is required but space loss needs to be kept as low as possible. At only 8.5mm thick, it can be used in very slim wall, floor and ceiling build-ups without adding excessive depth.

It is a versatile board that can be used across multiple applications, making it suitable for both DIY users and trade installers. It is especially useful where a dense acoustic board layer is required before installing the final wall, ceiling or floor finish.

8.5mm vs 10mm and 15mm DBx PRO — what is the difference?

The main difference is board thickness and mass. 8.5mm DBx PRO is the slimmest option, making it useful where space loss needs to be kept to an absolute minimum. 10mm DBx PRO provides a slightly thicker board layer, while 15mm DBx PRO is the thicker and heavier option.

The right option depends on the existing structure, available build-up depth, noise issue and overall soundproofing system design.

  • Fixed to resilient bars or furring channels for wall and ceiling decoupling
  • Used behind acoustic plasterboard in upgraded wall systems
  • Used as a floating board layer on timber floors
  • Used beneath suitable timber, laminate, carpet or other compatible floor finishes
  • Combined with acoustic mineral wool between joists
  • Combined with acoustic sealant around edges, joints and penetrations
  • Used in studio, music room and cinema room acoustic build-ups

Important Performance Note

8.5mm DBx PRO Acoustic Board is not a complete soundproofing system on its own. The final performance depends on the full wall, floor or ceiling construction.

Published acoustic figures should be treated as system or test-condition dependent. Existing structure, flanking paths, installation quality, board joints, perimeter sealing, floor finish and supporting materials can all affect the final result.

For compliance-led projects, such as Building Regulations Part E, use the correct tested system data and seek project-specific acoustic advice where required.

Handling Advice

DBx PRO boards are dense and should be handled carefully. Store the boards flat, dry and protected before installation.

When cutting, keep the boards flat at all times to help retain the sand core inside the board. After cutting, reseal cut edges with DBx board tape before installation.

Avoid leaving exposed, unsealed cut edges. Neat cutting, tight joints and good sealing are important for acoustic performance.

How to Install 8.5mm DBx PRO Acoustic Board

8.5mm DBx PRO Acoustic Board can be installed in walls, floors and ceilings as part of a complete acoustic soundproofing system. The correct installation method depends on the structure, noise issue and final finish.

For best results, boards should be installed flat, tightly jointed and properly sealed. Any cut edges should be resealed with DBx board tape before installation.

Before You Start

Check the installation area before fitting the DBx PRO boards. The surface or frame should be clean, dry, stable and suitable for the chosen fixing method.

Inspect the wall, floor or ceiling for gaps, cracks, loose areas, service penetrations and weak points. These should be repaired or sealed before the boards are installed.

Plan the full acoustic build-up before starting. DBx PRO is most effective when used with suitable supporting materials such as acoustic mineral wool, resilient bars, furring channels, acoustic plasterboard and acoustic sealant.

Step 1: Prepare the Area

Make sure the installation area is ready. The surface or frame should be:

  • Clean
  • Dry
  • Flat or correctly framed
  • Stable
  • Free from loose debris
  • Free from protruding fixings
  • Suitable for the chosen fixing method

For floors, fix any loose boards before installation. For walls, remove loose paint, wallpaper, unstable plaster or other weak surface material. For ceilings, make sure the fixing structure is capable of carrying the board weight.

Step 2: Seal Gaps and Weak Points

Before fitting the boards, seal obvious sound leakage paths. Pay close attention to:

  • Perimeter gaps
  • Cracks in walls or floors
  • Gaps between floorboards
  • Pipe penetrations
  • Socket openings
  • Service voids
  • Joist junctions
  • Ceiling and floor edges

Use acoustic sealant where suitable. Sound can travel through small gaps, so sealing is an important part of the installation.

Step 3: Plan the Board Layout

Measure the installation area and plan the board layout before cutting. DBx PRO boards measure 1200mm x 800mm and cover 0.96m² each.

Plan the layout so joints are tight and unnecessary small offcuts are avoided. For floors, boards are commonly installed in a brickwork pattern with staggered joints. For walls, portrait orientation is often preferred because it can make socket positioning and cutting easier.

Step 4: Cut the DBx PRO Boards

Keep the boards flat while cutting. This helps retain the sand core inside the board.

DBx PRO boards can be cut using:

  • Utility knife
  • Jigsaw with metal blade
  • Circular saw

Cut carefully around sockets, pipes, corners, thresholds and other obstructions. Keep cuts neat and avoid leaving unnecessary gaps.

Step 5: Tape Cut Edges

After cutting, reseal the cut edges with DBx board sealing tape before installation.

This is important because the board contains a sand-based core. Resealing the board helps keep the board intact and prevents material loss from cut edges.

Do not install boards with open or unsealed cut edges.

Step 6: Install DBx PRO on Floors

For floor installations, lay the DBx PRO boards floating over the prepared floor surface. Boards should be tightly butted together and installed in a brickwork pattern where possible.

Make sure the boards lie flat with no rocking, raised edges or open gaps. If the floor covering is being glued down, the DBx boards may need to be bonded to the floor or installed as part of a bonded board system depending on the floor finish requirements.

Keep all joints tight and seal perimeter gaps with acoustic sealant where required.

Step 7: Install DBx PRO on Walls

For wall installations, DBx PRO boards can be installed as part of a direct-to-wall or decoupled wall system.

For best decoupling results, DBx PRO is commonly mounted onto resilient bars or furring channels using suitable drywall screws. It can also be bonded directly to suitable wall surfaces using high-contact adhesive where the system allows.

When installing on walls, keep boards tightly jointed and avoid unnecessary gaps around sockets, corners and service penetrations.

Step 8: Install DBx PRO on Ceilings

For ceiling installations, DBx PRO is usually installed as part of a decoupled ceiling system with resilient bars or furring channels.

Ceiling installations must be securely fixed into a suitable structure. Check the board weight and make sure the ceiling system, fixings and framing are suitable before installation.

For best performance, DBx PRO may be combined with acoustic mineral wool in the ceiling void, resilient bars or furring channels, acoustic plasterboard and acoustic sealant.

Step 9: Seal Joints and Perimeter Edges

Once the boards are installed, check all joints, cut areas and perimeter edges.

Use acoustic sealant to seal:

  • Perimeter edges
  • Small gaps between boards
  • Pipe penetrations
  • Socket cut-outs
  • Corners and awkward details
  • Junctions with adjoining walls, floors or ceilings

The aim is to create a continuous acoustic layer with no obvious sound leakage paths.

Step 10: Install the Final Finish

After the DBx PRO boards are fitted and sealed, install the final finish according to the project requirements.

Depending on the application, this may include:

  • Acoustic plasterboard
  • Standard plasterboard
  • Timber flooring
  • Laminate flooring
  • Carpet and underlay
  • LVT or other compatible floor finishes
  • Additional acoustic boards or membranes

Always check the final floor or wall finish manufacturer’s guidance before installation.

Installing DBx PRO Under Timber or Laminate Flooring

DBx PRO can be used below timber or laminate floor finishes where the flooring manufacturer allows. The boards should be laid flat, tightly butted and properly sealed before the final floor finish is installed.

Expansion gaps required by the floor finish manufacturer should still be followed. Where suitable, perimeter gaps can be sealed with flexible acoustic sealant to reduce flanking noise.

Installing DBx PRO Under Carpet

When installing carpet over DBx PRO boards, a suitable carpet underlay may be required for comfort and finish quality.

Gripper rods may need to be fixed using suitable screws or high-grab adhesive, depending on the system. Avoid unnecessary fixings through acoustic layers where this could create sound bridges.

Installing DBx PRO with Underfloor Heating

DBx PRO can be suitable for use with some underfloor heating systems, but the full system must be checked before installation.

Confirm compatibility with the underfloor heating manufacturer and final floor finish manufacturer. The floor build-up must be suitable for heat transfer, load, expansion and long-term stability.

Installation Tips

  • Store DBx PRO boards flat and dry before installation.
  • Keep boards flat when cutting.
  • Reseal cut edges with DBx board sealing tape.
  • Plan board layout before fitting.
  • Use a brickwork pattern on floors where possible.
  • Keep joints tight and avoid gaps.
  • Use resilient bars or furring channels for better wall and ceiling decoupling.
  • Seal perimeter gaps with acoustic sealant.
  • Check final floor finish compatibility before installation.
  • Do not nail through DBx PRO into the subfloor where this would create a sound bridge.
  • Do not rely on DBx PRO alone where flanking noise paths are untreated.

Important Soundproofing Note

8.5mm DBx PRO Acoustic Board can improve the acoustic performance of a wall, floor or ceiling system, but the final result depends on the complete build-up.

Existing structure, flanking noise paths, board layout, fixing method, sealing detail, ceiling treatment, floor finish and surrounding materials can all affect performance.

If you are unsure how to use DBx PRO Acoustic Board in your project, please contact our team before installation. We can help advise on the most suitable acoustic system based on your room, structure, noise issue and available build-up depth.
