Acoustic Barrier Mat Floor Soundproofing System

  • A floor soundproofing system designed to reduce impact noise and airborne noise transfer
  • Combines Rockwool RW3 100mm, Tecsound 100, Absorbalay 15 and Resilient Tape 50mm
  • Ideal for timber floors where the floor void can be treated between the joists

Our Acoustic Barrier Mat Solution:

Floor Cavity Treatment

Rockwool RW3 100mm between joists

Helps absorb sound inside the floor void

Reduces resonance within the timber floor structure

The acoustic mineral wool is fitted between the joists to improve the sound performance of the floor cavity.

Acoustic Barrier Layers

Tecsound 100 Non-Adhesive Membrane

Absorbalay 15 barrier mat

Added mass and impact reduction

The Tecsound layer adds acoustic mass, while the Absorbalay layer helps reduce impact vibration and footstep noise.

Complete Floor Build-Up

Resilient Tape 50mm included

Designed for timber floor upgrades

Suitable below compatible floor finishes

This system is a stronger floor option than a simple mat-only build-up because it also treats the joist cavity below.

Acoustic performance can vary depending on the existing floor construction, joist depth, ceiling condition below, flanking paths and installation quality. For best results, treat the floor void carefully, keep joints tight and avoid leaving gaps around perimeters or penetrations.

The Acoustic Barrier Mat system works by treating both the floor surface and the cavity below. Rockwool RW3 100mm is fitted between the joists to help absorb sound inside the floor void and reduce resonance within the timber structure.

Tecsound 100 Non-Adhesive Membrane is then used as a dense acoustic layer over the existing floor. This adds mass to the floor build-up, helping reduce airborne sound transfer.

Absorbalay 15 is installed as the upper barrier mat layer to help reduce impact noise such as footsteps, movement and vibration. Resilient Tape 50mm is used around key contact points and perimeters to help reduce rigid connections.

This system can be upgraded by treating the ceiling below, especially where noise is travelling through the full floor and ceiling structure.

For stronger airborne noise or impact noise issues, combining this floor system with a resilient bar or resilient clip ceiling system below may improve the overall result.

It is also worth reviewing flanking paths such as surrounding walls, gaps around pipework, skirting lines and structural junctions, as sound can bypass the main floor build-up through these weak points.

The Acoustic Barrier Mat system is suitable for timber floors where both the floor void and floor surface can be treated. It is commonly used in flats, bedrooms, living rooms, rental properties, offices and spaces where noise is travelling between floors.

It is a good option when you want more than a simple overlay mat, because the system also includes acoustic insulation between the joists.

Start by exposing the floor area and checking the condition of the existing floorboards or deck. If the floor void is accessible, fit Rockwool RW3 100mm neatly between the joists, avoiding gaps and over-compression.

Lay the Tecsound 100 Non-Adhesive Membrane over the existing floor surface, keeping joints tight. Use Resilient Tape 50mm around the perimeter and key contact points where required.

Install the Absorbalay 15 barrier mat over the membrane, keeping edges neat and avoiding unnecessary gaps. The final floor finish should then be installed in line with the flooring manufacturer’s guidance.

FAQs

The Acoustic Barrier Mat system is a floor soundproofing build-up that combines Rockwool RW3 100mm, Tecsound 100 Non-Adhesive Membrane, Absorbalay 15 and Resilient Tape 50mm.

It is designed to improve timber floor performance by treating both the floor void and the floor surface.

Yes, the Absorbalay 15 layer helps reduce impact noise such as footsteps, movement and general floor vibration.

Results depend on the existing floor construction, final floor finish and whether sound is also travelling through walls or the ceiling below.

Yes, Tecsound 100 adds mass to the floor build-up, while Rockwool RW3 helps absorb sound inside the joist cavity.

This combination can help reduce airborne noise such as voices, TV noise and music travelling through the floor structure.

For this system, Rockwool RW3 100mm is included to treat the joist cavity.

If the floor void is accessible, fitting acoustic mineral wool between the joists helps reduce resonance and improves the overall floor soundproofing build-up.

The Impact Barrier Mat system is a slimmer overlay system using Tecsound 100 and Absorbalay 15.

The Acoustic Barrier Mat system goes further by also including Rockwool RW3 100mm between the joists and Resilient Tape 50mm as part of the floor build-up.

If noise is still travelling through the floor-ceiling structure, a ceiling soundproofing system below can help improve the final result.

This is especially useful where there is significant airborne noise, impact noise or flanking through the joists and ceiling below.
