Lorient LAS8008 si Drop Seal is a slimline, face-fixed automatic door-bottom seal designed to reduce sound, smoke, draught and light transfer through the gap beneath a door.
The LAS8008 si features a curved aluminium cover plate that conceals the fixings and gives the installed seal a clean, finished appearance. It is particularly suitable for upgrading existing doors because it is fixed directly onto the face of the door rather than being mortised into the bottom edge.
Its spring-loaded mechanical system automatically lowers the silicone gasket as the door closes and lifts it away from the floor when the door opens. No electrical connection is required.
What is the LAS8008 si used for?
The LAS8008 si is installed along the bottom face of a door to seal the gap between the door leaf and the floor or threshold.
Unsealed gaps beneath doors can allow sound, smoke, draughts and light to pass between adjoining rooms. The LAS8008 si closes this gap automatically when the door shuts, while retracting when the door opens to reduce contact with the floor.

How does the LAS8008 si work?
The LAS8008 si contains a mechanical drop-seal system operated by an actuator button positioned at the hinge side of the door.
As the door closes, the actuator button meets the door stop. This activates the internal mechanism and lowers the flexible silicone gasket onto the sill, floor or threshold plate.
When the door begins to open, pressure is released from the actuator button and the gasket lifts clear of the floor after only a small amount of door movement.
This helps reduce:

Face-fixed installation

Fire-test evidence
Lorient’s current technical datasheet lists fire-test evidence to BS EN 1634-1:2014+A1:2018 for FD30 and FD60 applications.
This does not mean that the LAS8008 si independently provides 30 or 60 minutes of fire resistance.
The stated performance applies only when the product is installed as part of an appropriate tested or assessed fire-resisting door assembly.
Before installing the LAS8008 si on a fire door, confirm:
- The permitted door-leaf construction
- The required installation position
- The approved fixing method
- The compatible perimeter seals
- The permitted threshold arrangement
- That the product is covered by the doorset evidence
Self-levelling operation
The LAS8008 si is designed to self-level when it operates.
The gasket begins to lower from the hinge side and adjusts across the width of the doorway as the door reaches its closed position.
This helps provide consistent contact where the sill or floor is slightly uneven.
The operating height can be adjusted using the actuator button independently of the fixing screws.
What gap can the LAS8008 si seal?
Lorient states a published minimum and maximum operating gap of:

Cutting Restrictions
The LAS8008 si must only be cut from the end opposite the actuator button.
Do not cut a supplied length below its stated minimum cut-back size. Cutting the seal too short can interfere with the internal spring and operating mechanism.
When calculating the finished aluminium length, Lorient instructs installers to measure between the door stops and deduct 6mm to allow for the end caps and operating clearance.

The LAS8008 si can operate directly against a suitable smooth sill or floor surface.
A threshold plate may be used to provide more consistent contact where the existing surface is:

How to Install the Lorient LAS8008 si Drop Seal
Lorient LAS8008 si Drop Seal is face-fixed onto the lower face of the door on the stop side.
The actuator button must be positioned at the hinge side so that it meets the door stop as the door closes.
The seal must be cut only from the end opposite the actuator button and must not be shortened below Lorient’s stated minimum cut-back length.
Always check the current Lorient fitting guide and the evidence for the complete doorset before installation.

Before You Start
Inspect the door, frame and threshold before cutting or fitting the seal.
Check that:

- The gap beneath the door is suitable
- The sill or threshold provides an appropriate sealing surface

Lorient’s fitting guide instructs the installer to position the seal with a gap of between 3mm and 10mm between the bottom of the door and the sill.
Step 1: Check the Supplied Length
Remove the LAS8008 si from its packaging and identify:
- The actuator-button end
- The end from which the seal may be shortened
- The permitted minimum cut-back length
Do not cut the seal until its supplied length and minimum permitted size have been checked.
The cut-back limits are:
- 335mm can be reduced to 255mm
- 435mm can be reduced to 335mm
- 535mm can be reduced to 435mm
- 635mm can be reduced to 535mm
- 735mm can be reduced to 635mm
- 835mm can be reduced to 735mm
- 935mm can be reduced to 835mm
- 1035mm can be reduced to 935mm

Cutting the seal below the stated size can prevent the internal mechanism from operating correctly.
Step 2: Measure Between the Door Stops
Measure the distance between the two door stops at the bottom of the doorway.
Take the measurement at the exact height and position where the LAS8008 si will be installed.
Deduct 6mm from the measured distance to allow for the end caps and operating clearance.
Mark the finished cut length onto the end opposite the actuator button.
Check the measurement before cutting.
Step 3: Pull Back the Silicone Gasket
At the end opposite the actuator button, carefully pull the silicone gasket back from the area that needs to be cut.
Move enough gasket away from the cutting position to prevent the saw from damaging it.
Do not:
- Pull the gasket from the actuator end
- Stretch the gasket excessively
- Cut through the gasket with the aluminium
- Damage the internal operating mechanism
Step 4: Cut the Aluminium Sections
Using a suitable power saw or hacksaw, cut the aluminium housing and cover sections to the marked length.
Support the seal securely while cutting to prevent vibration or distortion.
Cut only from the end opposite the actuator button.
After cutting:
- Remove aluminium swarf
- Remove sharp burrs
- Clean debris from the housing
- Check that the cover still slides correctly
- Confirm that the internal mechanism has not been damaged
Metal swarf must not be left inside the mechanism.
Step 5: Reposition and Trim the Gasket
Push the silicone gasket back into its normal position.
Allow it to sit naturally without stretching or bunching.
Trim the gasket to the finished length using a sharp knife, scissors or suitable snips.
The gasket should finish neatly within the end-cap arrangement without being pulled tight or left excessively long.
Step 6: Remove the Curved Cover Plate
Separate the curved aluminium cover plate from the fixing housing by sliding it lengthways.
Place the cover somewhere clean and protected to prevent scratching or bending.
The internal aluminium housing must be exposed so that it can be drilled and screw-fixed to the door.
Step 7: Fit the Actuator-End Cap
Fit one end cap onto the actuator-button end of the aluminium housing.
Lorient instructs that the end cap should be secured using a plastic mallet.
Tap the cap carefully into place without:
- Damaging the actuator button
- Splitting the end cap
- Distorting the aluminium housing
- Marking the visible finish
In high-traffic areas or where the end cap may be exposed to impact or abuse, Lorient recommends securing it with a small amount of suitable high-strength adhesive applied to the locating prongs.
Step 8: Position the Seal on the Door
Place the LAS8008 si against the bottom face of the door on the stop side.
Position the actuator-button end tightly towards the hinge-side door stop.
Confirm that:
- The actuator button is at the hinge side
- The aluminium housing is level
- The seal fits between the door stops
- The cover plate will have sufficient clearance
- The gasket aligns with the sill or threshold
- The door-bottom gap is between 3mm and 10mm
Temporarily hold or clamp the housing securely while marking and drilling the fixing positions.
Step 9: Drill the Aluminium Housing
Mark suitable fixing positions along the exposed aluminium housing.
Drill fixing holes through the housing using the drill sizes and spacing appropriate to the supplied screws and current Lorient fitting guide.
Distribute the fixings along the seal so that the housing will remain straight and firmly secured.
Take care not to drill into:
- The internal spring mechanism
- The silicone gasket
- The actuator assembly
- The curved cover channels
Remove all drilling debris before fixing the seal.
Step 10: Pre-Drill the Door
Hold the drilled housing in its final position and transfer the fixing-hole locations onto the door.
Drill suitable pilot holes into the door.
The drill depth and pilot-hole size must suit:
- The supplied screws
- The construction of the door
- The thickness of the fixing area
- The doorset manufacturer’s requirements
Do not drill into concealed door hardware, glazing channels or structural components without confirming that it is safe to do so.
Step 11: Screw-Fix the Housing
Position the aluminium housing back onto the door and secure it using the supplied screws.
Tighten the screws evenly so that the housing remains straight.
Do not overtighten the fixings, as this could:
- Distort the aluminium housing
- Prevent the cover from sliding into place
- Restrict the internal mechanism
- Damage the door face
Check that the housing is secure and that the actuator button can move freely.
Step 12: Refit the Curved Cover Plate
Slide the curved aluminium cover plate back over the fixed housing.
The cover should conceal the fixing screws and sit neatly against the door face.
Check that it:
- Slides fully into position
- Sits straight
- Does not bind against the mechanism
- Is not bowed or twisted
- Does not obstruct the actuator button
Step 13: Fit the Remaining End Cap
Fit the remaining end cap and finishing plug at the cut end of the drop seal.
Make sure the end cap is fully seated and does not interfere with the silicone gasket.
Where the installation is in a high-traffic or vulnerable area, consider securing the end cap using a suitable adhesive in accordance with Lorient’s guidance.
Step 14: Fit the Striker Button
For timber frames, position the supplied striker button onto the door stop where the actuator button makes contact as the door closes.
Align the striker so the actuator button meets it directly rather than contacting the stop at an angle.
The striker should:
- Activate the seal during the final closing movement
- Allow the door to latch correctly
- Remain securely fixed
- Not obstruct the opening or closing of the door
Step 15: Test the Drop-Seal Operation
Open and close the door while observing the gasket.
The gasket should:
- Remain lifted while the door is open
- Begin lowering as the door approaches the stop
- Make contact during the final closing movement
- Rest consistently across the sill or threshold
- Retract as soon as the door begins to open
Short seals below 635mm use a single spring and may only operate correctly once fully fixed and activated by the door.
Step 16: Adjust the Actuator Button
Adjust the gasket movement by turning the actuator button:
- Clockwise — reduces the amount of seal movement.
- Anti-clockwise — increases the amount of seal movement.
Make small adjustments and test the door after each change.
For optimum results, Lorient states that the silicone gasket should touch the sill during the final closing movement of the door.
Avoid excessive drop or compression.
Too much movement can:
- Make the door difficult to close
- Prevent the latch from engaging
- Cause excessive gasket wear
- Place unnecessary strain on the mechanism
- Increase door-operating forces
Step 17: Check Self-Levelling Contact
Close the door and inspect the gasket across the complete width.
Check that:
- Both ends make contact
- The centre makes contact
- There are no visible gaps
- The gasket is not excessively compressed
- The seal is not being forced sideways
Where the floor is unsuitable or inconsistent, install an approved threshold plate to provide a smoother contact surface.
Step 18: Complete the Final Door Check
Open and close the door several times.
Confirm that:
- The door opens freely
- The door closes completely
- The latch engages correctly
- The silicone gasket retracts when the door opens
- The gasket contacts the sill when the door closes
- The curved cover remains securely fitted
- The end caps remain in position
- The housing does not move
- The actuator button meets the striker correctly
- The installation does not impede the door
Installing with Perimeter Seals
Lorient recommends using the LAS8008 si with a suitable perimeter seal.
The perimeter seal should close the gaps around the:
- Head of the door
- Hinge-side jamb
- Closing-side jamb
The LAS8008 si then closes the remaining gap beneath the door.
For tested acoustic, smoke or fire performance, use the complete component arrangement stated in the applicable doorset evidence.
Installing with a Threshold Plate
A suitable threshold plate can provide a firm and level surface beneath the drop seal.
This is useful where the existing floor is:
- Carpeted
- Uneven
- Interrupted by grout joints
- Subject to high levels of wear
- Formed from different adjoining materials
The threshold plate must not reduce the available door clearance below the permitted installation range.
After installing the threshold plate, readjust the actuator so the gasket makes light and consistent contact during the final closing movement.
Installation Tips
- Check the permitted cut-back length before cutting.
- Only cut from the end opposite the actuator button.
- Deduct 6mm from the distance between the door stops.
- Remove the gasket from the cutting area before sawing.

The gasket should make continuous contact with the sill during the final closing movement but must not be adjusted so heavily that it prevents the door from operating correctly.

- The door leaf
- The frame
- The perimeter sealing system
- The threshold plate or floor surface
- The door hardware
- The surrounding construction
- The installation workmanship
