Norseal NOR615 Door Threshold Plate

Norseal NOR615 Door Threshold Plate is a low-profile aluminium threshold plate designed to provide a firm, smooth and even sealing surface beneath a door.

Measuring 40mm wide and 4.9mm high, the NOR615 can improve the effectiveness of automatic drop seals and other door-bottom seals by giving the flexible gasket a consistent surface against which to close.

The gently curved profile also covers narrow joins between different floor finishes, creating a neat transition across the doorway.

What is the NOR615 threshold plate used for?

The NOR615 is installed on the floor directly beneath the door leaf.

It is commonly used to:

  • Provide an even contact surface beneath an automatic drop seal
  • Improve contact between a door-bottom gasket and the threshold
  • Bridge the join between different floor finishes
  • Cover narrow grout lines and small inconsistencies in the floor
  • Support acoustic and smoke-sealing door arrangements
  • Create a low-profile transition suitable for wheeled traffic
  • Provide a durable alternative to sealing directly against carpet
  • Complete a doorway fitted with Norseal acoustic seals

How does the NOR615 work?

Automatic drop seals work most effectively when their gasket closes against a firm, smooth and continuous surface.

Carpet, grout joints, worn flooring and changes between different floor finishes can prevent a gasket from making consistent contact across the entire doorway.

The NOR615 creates a fixed aluminium sealing surface beneath the door. When the door closes, the drop-seal gasket lands on the threshold plate rather than the uneven or compressible floor beneath it.

This can help reduce small gaps beneath the gasket and improve the overall consistency of the door-bottom seal.

Does the NOR615 seal the door by itself?

No. The NOR615 is a threshold plate and does not contain a flexible sealing gasket.

It should be used with a suitable automatic drop seal, door-bottom seal or other compatible threshold-sealing component.

The correct combination will depend on:

  • The available gap beneath the door
  • The door construction and configuration
  • The selected automatic drop seal
  • The position and width of the drop-seal gasket
  • The condition of the floor
  • The required acoustic or smoke performance
  • Any certification applying to the complete doorset

Can the NOR615 help with acoustic sealing?

Yes. The NOR615 is designed to complement Norseal automatic drop seals by providing a level surface beneath the door.

The gap beneath a door can be a significant sound-leakage path. A correctly installed threshold plate can help the drop-seal gasket close this gap more consistently than it would against carpet, uneven tiles or interrupted floor finishes.

However, the NOR615 does not have a standalone decibel or acoustic rating.

Any quoted sound-reduction performance applies to the complete tested door assembly, including:

  • The door leaf
  • The door frame
  • The perimeter seals
  • The automatic drop seal
  • The threshold plate or floor surface
  • Glazing and ironmongery
  • The frame-to-wall junction
  • The quality of installation

Installing the NOR615 beneath an existing door will not independently give the door a particular Rw or decibel rating.

Why use a threshold plate beneath a drop seal?

A drop-seal gasket may not make reliable contact when it closes directly onto a soft or uneven floor.

Potential problems include:

  • The gasket sinking into carpet
  • Small gaps forming over grout joints
  • Uneven tiles preventing continuous contact
  • Different floor finishes meeting beneath the door
  • The gasket touching only the highest areas of the floor
  • Floor wear changing the sealing surface over time

The NOR615 provides a durable aluminium surface across the doorway, helping the gasket maintain more uniform contact.

Suitable for carpet and solid floors

Norseal states that its low-profile threshold plates are suitable for application over solid floors and alongside carpeted floor finishes.

When fitting the NOR615 against carpet, the threshold must be secured to a stable substrate rather than relying on the carpet to support the plate.

Loose, thick or compressible carpet should be properly finished around the threshold so that the aluminium plate remains firmly supported.

Approved Document M compliance

Norseal states that the NOR615 complies with Approved Document M.

Its low 4.9mm profile provides a gradual transition across the doorway and is suitable for wheeled traffic.

Final accessibility compliance still depends on the complete doorway, including:

  • The total threshold height
  • The adjoining floor levels
  • The gradient and shape of the transition
  • The clear opening width
  • The door-opening force
  • The building’s project-specific accessibility requirements

The product should therefore be installed as part of a correctly designed accessible doorway rather than relying on the threshold plate alone to establish compliance.

Where can the NOR615 be used?

The NOR615 is suitable for use at the threshold of doorsets in residential, commercial and public buildings.

Typical applications can include:

  • Offices and meeting rooms
  • Schools and education buildings
  • Hotels and hospitality premises
  • Healthcare environments
  • Apartment and residential developments
  • Recording studios and media rooms
  • Consultation and treatment rooms
  • Commercial fit-outs
  • Public buildings
  • Acoustic timber doorsets
  • Smoke-control door assemblies
  • Doors positioned between different floor finishes

Can the NOR615 be used with the NOR810?

Yes. The NOR615 is suitable for use beneath Norseal automatic drop seals such as the NOR810, provided the dimensions and doorset specification are compatible.

The NOR810 closes the gap beneath the door, while the NOR615 provides the firm threshold surface against which its silicone gasket seals.

The drop seal must be adjusted after the threshold plate has been installed so that the gasket makes light and continuous contact without excessive compression.

Helpful advice before buying

Measure the doorway between the jambs before selecting a length.

Also check:

  • Whether the 40mm width provides enough contact area for the selected gasket
  • The height of the threshold relative to the bottom of the door
  • The drop range of the automatic door-bottom seal
  • The condition and stability of the floor
  • Whether screw fixing or adhesive bonding is appropriate
  • Whether pipes, cables or underfloor heating are present
  • Whether fixings are included with the selected product variant
  • Any acoustic, smoke, fire or accessibility requirements applying to the doorway

The NOR615 should be treated as one component within a complete door-sealing arrangement. It does not independently soundproof, smoke-seal or fire-rate a doorway.

Automatic Drop-Seal Compatibility

The NOR615 provides a firm surface beneath a compatible automatic drop seal.

The selected seal must be suitable for:

  • The door type and construction
  • The available gap beneath the door
  • The 40mm threshold width
  • The 4.9mm threshold height
  • The position of the flexible gasket
  • The required drop distance
  • The relevant doorset certification

After the NOR615 has been fitted, the automatic seal should be readjusted so that its gasket makes light and continuous contact across the threshold.

Acoustic Performance Note

A firm threshold surface can improve acoustic sealing by helping a door-bottom gasket maintain consistent contact.

The NOR615 does not have a standalone Rw or decibel rating.

Final sound reduction depends on:

  • The construction and mass of the door leaf
  • The perimeter seals around the head and jambs
  • The automatic door-bottom seal
  • The adjustment of the gasket
  • The threshold surface
  • The frame and surrounding wall
  • Glazing and ironmongery
  • The quality of installation

Do not advertise the NOR615 as independently achieving a particular acoustic rating.

Approved Document M Note

Norseal states that the NOR615 complies with Approved Document M.

The threshold plate’s low profile can support accessible doorway design, but the compliance of the complete doorway depends on factors beyond the threshold plate itself.

These can include:

  • The finished floor levels
  • The total threshold upstand
  • The gradient of adjoining surfaces
  • The door-opening force
  • The effective clear width
  • The needs of the building and its users

Check the complete installed doorway against the current project specification and applicable building requirements.

Fire and Smoke Performance Note

The NOR615 is an aluminium threshold plate and is not an intumescent fire seal.

Where it is proposed for use beneath a fire-resisting or smoke-control door:

  • Check the evidence for the complete doorset
  • Confirm compatibility with the selected automatic drop seal
  • Use only the specified threshold arrangement
  • Do not remove required intumescent or smoke seals
  • Follow the door manufacturer’s installation requirements

Handling and Storage

Store the NOR615:

  • Flat and fully supported
  • In a clean and dry location
  • Protected from bending and impact damage
  • With the anodised face protected from scratching
  • Away from cement dust, wet trades and corrosive contamination

Support the profile properly while cutting and remove all sharp burrs before installation.

How to Install the Norseal NOR615 Door Threshold Plate

Norseal NOR615 Door Threshold Plate can be installed at the threshold of a doorset using suitable screw fixings or construction adhesive.

The threshold should be measured and cut to fit between the door jambs, positioned beneath the door-bottom gasket and fixed securely without preventing the door from opening, closing or latching correctly.

Always follow the current Norseal fitting instructions and any project-specific doorset requirements.

What You’ll Need

  • Norseal NOR615 threshold plate in the required length
  • Suitable screws and plugs, or the NOR615 /FX fixing-kit version
  • Suitable construction adhesive for aluminium and the floor substrate
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil or suitable marker
  • Hand saw or power saw suitable for aluminium
  • Power drill
  • 4mm drill bit
  • 6mm masonry drill bit for suitable concrete-floor fixings
  • Countersink bit
  • Screwdriver
  • File or deburring tool
  • Brush or vacuum for removing drilling dust
  • Safety glasses
  • Suitable gloves
  • Hearing protection when using power tools

Before You Start

Inspect the door, frame, floor and associated door-bottom seal.

Check that:

  • The door opens, closes and latches correctly
  • The floor provides a stable base for the threshold plate
  • The 40mm width is suitable for the selected gasket
  • The 4.9mm threshold height leaves sufficient clearance beneath the door
  • The automatic drop seal can be adjusted to contact the plate
  • The threshold will not interfere with the swing of the door
  • No pipes, cables or underfloor-heating elements are present beneath drilling positions
  • The proposed installation is compatible with any doorset certification

Measure the door clearance at several points across the opening and through the complete swing path.

Step 1: Measure Between the Door Jambs

Measure the width between the two door jambs at the position where the NOR615 will be fitted.

Record the measurement as L.

Measure at floor level rather than assuming that the width is identical higher up the frame.

Where the threshold must fit around door stops or irregular frame details, measure these areas separately.

Step 2: Mark the Threshold Plate

Transfer measurement L onto the NOR615 threshold plate.

Use a pencil or suitable marker to indicate:

  • The finished cut length
  • The intended orientation
  • Any profiling required around the frame or door stops
  • The intended gasket contact position

Check the measurement before cutting.

Step 3: Cut the Threshold Plate

Machine-cut the aluminium threshold plate to the required length using a suitable saw.

Support the profile properly while cutting to prevent vibration, movement or bending.

After cutting:

  • Remove all sharp edges and burrs
  • Clean away aluminium swarf
  • Check that the profile has not been distorted
  • Confirm that the satin-silver surface has not been damaged

Step 4: Dry Fit the Threshold

Place the NOR615 in its intended position beneath the door.

Check that:

  • It fits neatly between the jambs
  • The complete plate is firmly supported by the floor
  • The 40mm profile aligns with the door-bottom gasket
  • The threshold does not rock or move
  • The door can pass freely over the 4.9mm-high profile
  • The plate does not obstruct the door from closing or latching

Carefully open and close the door while the unsecured threshold is safely held in position.

Step 5: Choose the Fixing Method

The NOR615 may be installed using:

  • Screw fixing
  • Adhesive bonding

Select a method suitable for the floor construction, site conditions and doorset specification.

Screw fixing provides a mechanical connection but requires the floor to be drilled.

Adhesive bonding avoids visible screws but requires a clean, stable substrate and an adhesive compatible with both aluminium and the floor material.

Step 6A: Mark the Screw-Fixing Positions

Where screw fixing is required, mark fixing positions along the length of the threshold.

Norseal’s current fitting instructions specify that the fixing holes should be positioned approximately 200mm apart.

Distribute the holes evenly so that the threshold will be held securely along its complete length.

Step 7A: Drill and Countersink the Threshold

Drill the marked fixing holes through the aluminium using a 4mm drill bit.

Countersink every hole so that the finished screw heads can sit completely flush with the surface of the threshold plate.

Raised screw heads could:

  • Interfere with wheeled traffic
  • Damage the door-bottom gasket
  • Create an uneven sealing surface
  • Produce a snagging point

Remove all drilling swarf and sharp edges.

Step 8A: Mark the Floor

Place the drilled threshold plate back into its final position.

Use the drilled holes as a guide to mark the fixing centres onto the floor.

Check the threshold position and gasket alignment before removing it for floor drilling.

Step 9A: Drill a Concrete Floor

Where fixing into a suitable concrete floor, Norseal specifies drilling the marked positions using a 6mm masonry drill bit.

Before drilling, confirm that:

  • No pipes, cables or heating elements are present
  • The supplied or selected plugs are suitable for the substrate
  • The drilling depth is appropriate
  • Drilling will not damage a damp-proof membrane or underfloor-heating system

Remove all drilling dust before inserting the plugs.

For timber, tile, screed or other substrates, use fixings specifically selected for that material.

Step 10A: Screw-Fix the Threshold

Return the NOR615 to its final position and secure it using suitable screws and plugs.

Tighten the screws evenly along the plate.

Make sure each screw head sits completely flush within its countersunk hole.

Do not overtighten the screws, as this could:

  • Distort the aluminium profile
  • Pull the threshold unevenly against the floor
  • Damage the floor finish
  • Create an inconsistent sealing surface

The finished plate should be secure, fully supported and free from movement.

Step 6B: Prepare for Adhesive Fixing

Where adhesive bonding is required, prepare the floor and underside of the threshold according to the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions.

The contact surfaces should normally be:

  • Clean
  • Dry
  • Stable
  • Free from dust
  • Free from grease, wax and loose material

Do not bond the threshold directly onto loose carpet, unstable flooring or contaminated surfaces.

Step 7B: Apply the Adhesive

Run a continuous bead of suitable adhesive along the full length of the channel on the underside of the NOR615.

Use enough adhesive to secure and support the plate without allowing excessive material to spread beyond its edges.

The adhesive is not supplied with the standard NOR615 threshold plate.

Step 8B: Position the Threshold

Place the NOR615 carefully into its final position.

Press it firmly and evenly against the floor.

Check immediately that:

  • The plate remains aligned beneath the door
  • The gasket will land on the 40mm-wide surface
  • The threshold is straight
  • Both curved edges remain flat against the floor
  • Adhesive has not spread onto the visible surface

Correct the position before the adhesive begins to set.

Step 9B: Allow the Adhesive to Cure

Allow the adhesive to dry and cure in accordance with its manufacturer’s instructions.

Do not allow foot or wheeled traffic across the threshold until the adhesive has developed sufficient strength.

Curing time will depend on:

  • The selected adhesive
  • The floor substrate
  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • The amount of adhesive applied

Step 10: Adjust the Automatic Drop Seal

Once the threshold plate is securely fixed, adjust the associated automatic drop seal according to its own fitting instructions.

The flexible gasket should make light and continuous contact across the NOR615 when the door closes.

Check for:

  • Full contact at the hinge side
  • Full contact at the closing side
  • Contact through the centre
  • Open gaps between the gasket and threshold
  • Excessive gasket compression
  • Interference with the door’s operation

Do not over-adjust the drop seal. Excessive compression can increase door-operating forces and cause unnecessary wear to the gasket and mechanism.

Step 11: Complete the Final Door Check

Open and close the door several times.

Confirm that:

  • The door opens freely
  • The door passes over the threshold without scraping
  • The door closes completely
  • The latch engages correctly
  • The threshold remains securely fixed
  • All screw heads are flush
  • The threshold does not flex or move
  • The automatic seal retracts correctly
  • The gasket contacts the threshold consistently
  • No sharp edges or burrs remain exposed

The threshold plate must not impede the opening or closing of the door.

Installation Tips

  • Measure between the door jambs at floor level.
  • Check that the 40mm width is suitable for the gasket.
  • Confirm that the door can pass over the 4.9mm profile.
  • Dry fit the threshold before drilling or applying adhesive.
  • Use a saw blade suitable for aluminium.
  • Support the plate fully while cutting.
  • Position screw holes approximately 200mm apart.
  • Use a 4mm drill bit through the aluminium.
  • Countersink every screw hole.
  • Use a 6mm masonry bit where fixing into suitable concrete.
  • Check for hidden services and underfloor heating before drilling.
  • Apply adhesive along the full underside channel.
  • Allow adhesive to cure before permitting traffic.
  • Adjust the drop seal only after the threshold is securely fitted.
  • Check that the door continues to close and latch correctly.

Maintenance Advice

Inspect the NOR615 periodically as part of the door’s normal maintenance programme.

Check for:

  • Loose or raised fixing screws
  • Movement of the threshold plate
  • Damage or distortion to the aluminium profile
  • Sharp or damaged edges
  • Failed or separated adhesive
  • Dirt affecting gasket contact
  • Changes in the clearance beneath the door
  • Incorrect operation of the automatic drop seal
  • Failure of the door to close or latch correctly

Clean the threshold with a soft cloth and a suitable mild cleaning product.

Avoid abrasive pads, wire brushes and aggressive chemicals that could damage the satin-silver anodised finish.

Remove dust and debris from the sealing surface so the door-bottom gasket can continue to make consistent contact.

Important Performance Note

The NOR615 is a supporting threshold component. It does not provide complete acoustic, smoke or fire containment by itself.

Final performance depends on:

  • The automatic drop or door-bottom seal
  • The perimeter seals around the head and jambs
  • The door and frame construction
  • The adjustment of the gasket
  • The surrounding construction
  • The quality of installation

Where the door forms part of a certified acoustic, smoke or fire-resisting assembly, install only the threshold and sealing arrangement permitted by the relevant test evidence, assessment or doorset certification.
