TECSOUND 50 Non-Adhesive Acoustic Membrane

TECSOUND 50 Non-Adhesive Membrane is a high-density, flexible acoustic membrane designed to improve sound insulation in walls, floors and ceilings. With a mass of 5kg/m², it adds a slim but effective acoustic barrier layer to soundproofing systems where extra mass is needed without creating a bulky build-up.

Unlike the self-adhesive SY range, this version is non-adhesive, making it suitable for installations where the membrane will be mechanically fixed, laid within a floor build-up, sandwiched between board layers, or installed as part of a wider acoustic system.

What is TECSOUND 50 Non-Adhesive Membrane?

TECSOUND 50 is a flexible acoustic barrier membrane used to add mass and reduce sound transfer through building structures. It is commonly used as part of wall, floor and ceiling soundproofing systems in homes, flats, offices, studios and commercial spaces.

The membrane is designed to provide acoustic mass in a thin layer, making it useful where space is limited but improved sound insulation is needed. Its flexible format allows it to be fitted into a wide range of acoustic build-ups.

How does TECSOUND 50 work?

TECSOUND 50 works by adding density and flexibility to the construction. The added mass helps reduce airborne sound transmission, while the flexible membrane helps dampen vibration and resonance within the system.

When installed between board layers, within a floor system, or as part of a wall or ceiling build-up, TECSOUND 50 helps create a more effective acoustic barrier. For best results, it should be used as part of a complete soundproofing system rather than as a single standalone layer.

What type of noise does TECSOUND 50 help reduce?

TECSOUND 50 is mainly used to help reduce airborne noise. This includes voices, TV noise, music, office noise and general room-to-room sound transfer.

When used within the correct floor or ceiling build-up, it can also help reduce vibration and impact noise transmission, such as footsteps, movement and structure-borne noise. The final performance depends on the complete system, the existing structure and the quality of installation.

Where can TECSOUND 50 be used?

TECSOUND 50 can be used in a wide range of domestic, commercial and trade soundproofing projects. It is suitable for walls, floors and ceilings, as well as specialist acoustic applications where a flexible mass layer is required.

  • Party wall soundproofing
  • Floor soundproofing systems
  • Ceiling soundproofing build-ups
  • Board sandwich constructions
  • Studios, music rooms and media rooms
  • Home offices and domestic refurbishments
  • Commercial offices, meeting rooms and shared spaces
  • Machinery, plant and vibration-dampening applications where suitable

Why choose the non-adhesive version?

The non-adhesive version is useful when you do not need a peel-and-stick backing, or where the membrane will be held in place by the surrounding construction layers. It is often chosen for floor systems, board sandwich constructions, wall linings and projects where installers prefer to control the fixing method themselves.

This makes TECSOUND 50 a versatile option for both DIY customers and professional installers who want a flexible acoustic barrier that can be built into different wall, floor and ceiling systems.

How to Install TECSOUND 50 Non-Adhesive Acoustic Membrane

TECSOUND 50 Non-Adhesive Membrane is a high-density acoustic membrane designed to reduce airborne noise transfer through walls, ceilings and floors. Unlike the self-adhesive SY version, this membrane does not have a peel-and-stick backing, so it needs to be installed using a suitable adhesive, mechanical fixing method, or held securely within a layered acoustic build-up.

Because it is flexible and easy to cut, TECSOUND 50 can be used in a wide range of DIY and trade soundproofing projects, including party walls, ceilings, floors, studios, offices, media rooms and home refurbishments.

What You’ll Need

  • TECSOUND 50 Non-Adhesive Acoustic Membrane
  • Measuring tape
  • Sharp Stanley knife or utility blade
  • Straight edge or metal ruler
  • Suitable adhesive, such as a compatible contact adhesive or acoustic adhesive
  • Trowel, brush or roller for applying adhesive
  • Hand roller for pressing the membrane into place
  • Gloves for handling
  • Acoustic sealant for edges and gaps
  • Acoustic putty pads for socket boxes, if required
  • Tecsound jointing tape or suitable acoustic tape, if required

Before You Start

Allow TECSOUND 50 to acclimatise in the room for around 24 hours before installation where possible. This helps the membrane settle to the room temperature and makes it easier to handle and position.

TECSOUND 50 is a high-mass product, so larger sections can be difficult to control, especially on ceilings or overhead areas. For larger installations, we recommend working in pairs and cutting the membrane into manageable sections before fitting.

Step 1: Prepare the Surface

Before installing the membrane, make sure the surface is properly prepared. The surface should be:

  • Clean — remove dust, dirt, grease, debris and loose particles.
  • Dry — avoid installing onto damp or wet surfaces.
  • Smooth and stable — fill any cracks, gaps or uneven areas before fitting.
  • Structurally sound — do not apply to weak, crumbling or unstable surfaces.

TECSOUND 50 can be installed with suitable plasterboard, masonry, timber, MDF, concrete and board systems. Good preparation is important because loose material, dust or moisture can reduce the effectiveness of the adhesive or fixing method.

Step 2: Measure and Cut the Membrane

  1. Measure the area where the membrane will be installed.
  2. Mark the required size on the membrane.
  3. Use a sharp Stanley knife or utility blade with a straight edge to cut the membrane neatly.
  4. Cut accurately to reduce gaps, waste and weak points in the finished system.

Allow for a small overlap of approximately 5mm to 10mm between sheets where possible. If installing on a ceiling, pre-cut smaller sections to make handling, positioning and fixing easier.

Step 3: Apply the Adhesive or Fixing Method

Choose a suitable adhesive or fixing method for your application. For wall and ceiling installations, a compatible contact adhesive or acoustic adhesive may be used. Always follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions for coverage, open time, drying time and surface compatibility.

  1. Apply adhesive to one section at a time so it does not dry before the membrane is positioned.
  2. Use a trowel, brush or roller to create an even adhesive layer.
  3. If using contact adhesive, apply it to both the surface and the back of the membrane if required by the adhesive instructions.
  4. Allow the adhesive to become ready for bonding before positioning the membrane.

For floor systems or board sandwich constructions, the membrane may be laid or held in place by the surrounding layers rather than bonded directly. The correct method depends on the full soundproofing build-up.

Step 4: Fix TECSOUND 50 in Place

  1. Carefully align the membrane with the installation area.
  2. Press the membrane firmly onto the prepared adhesive or into position within the system.
  3. Smooth the membrane as you work to reduce air pockets and wrinkles.
  4. Use a hand roller or firm pressure to ensure good contact across the full surface.
  5. Continue fitting each section, keeping coverage as continuous as possible.

Work slowly and methodically. Avoid leaving gaps between sheets, as gaps can reduce the overall acoustic result.

Step 5: Overlap and Seal the Joints

Where sheets meet, overlap TECSOUND 50 by around 5mm to 10mm where possible. Press the overlap firmly to create a close-fitting joint.

For improved acoustic performance and airtightness, joints can be reinforced using Tecsound jointing tape or a suitable acoustic tape. This helps create a more continuous soundproofing layer, especially in higher-performance wall, floor and ceiling systems.

Step 6: Trim Edges and Openings

Once the membrane is fitted, trim any excess material around edges, corners, sockets, switches, pipes or openings using a sharp blade and straight edge.

Small gaps can reduce soundproofing performance, so seal weak points carefully. Use acoustic sealant around perimeter edges, joints and small gaps. Where electrical sockets or switches are present, use acoustic putty pads to help reduce sound leakage through the back boxes.

Step 7: Add the Next Layer

Once TECSOUND 50 has been installed, it can be covered or incorporated into the next part of the soundproofing system. Depending on your project, this may include:

  • Acoustic plasterboard
  • Standard plasterboard
  • MDF or timber board
  • Floating floor layers
  • Resilient bars or furring channels
  • Acoustic mineral wool within the cavity
  • Additional acoustic membrane layers where specified

TECSOUND 50 performs best as part of a complete acoustic system. For example, wall and ceiling systems often combine acoustic membrane, acoustic insulation, resilient isolation products, plasterboard layers and acoustic sealant to improve airborne noise reduction.

Installation Tips

  • Check adhesive compatibility — use a suitable adhesive for both the membrane and the surface.
  • Work in manageable sections — especially on ceilings and larger areas.
  • Use firm pressure — a roller helps improve contact and reduce trapped air.
  • Keep coverage continuous — gaps can reduce acoustic performance.
  • Seal all edges and penetrations — sound can pass through small openings.
  • Use sharp blades — clean cuts make fitting easier and reduce waste.
  • Work in pairs where needed — the membrane is heavy and can be difficult to handle alone.

Important Soundproofing Note

Soundproofing performance depends on the full system, not just one individual product. TECSOUND 50 adds valuable acoustic mass, but the final result will also depend on the existing structure, supporting materials, installation quality and how well gaps and flanking paths are controlled.
