TECSOUND 100 Non-Adhesive Acoustic Membrane

TECSOUND 100 Non-Adhesive Membrane is a heavy-duty, flexible acoustic membrane designed to improve sound insulation in walls, floors and ceilings. With a mass of 10kg/m², it is the highest-mass option in the non-adhesive Tecsound range and is suitable for projects where maximum acoustic mass is required.

This non-adhesive version is ideal for installations where the membrane will be laid within a floor build-up, mechanically fixed, sandwiched between board layers, or held securely as part of a complete acoustic system. It is suitable for both trade installations and demanding DIY soundproofing projects.

What is TECSOUND 100 Non-Adhesive Membrane?

TECSOUND 100 is a high-density acoustic barrier membrane used to add significant mass to building structures. It helps reduce sound transfer through floors, walls and ceilings by adding a dense, flexible layer into the construction.

Because it provides 10kg/m² of acoustic mass, TECSOUND 100 is often chosen for high-performance soundproofing systems, including studios, flats, apartments, offices, plant areas and commercial spaces where stronger noise control is needed.

How does TECSOUND 100 work?

TECSOUND 100 works by combining mass and flexibility. The added mass helps reduce airborne sound transmission, while the flexible membrane helps dampen vibration and resonance within the structure.

When used with other acoustic materials such as acoustic plasterboard, mineral wool, resilient bars, furring channels or floating floor layers, TECSOUND 100 can form part of a high-performance acoustic system. This layered approach helps improve sound insulation across a wider range of noise issues.

What type of noise does TECSOUND 100 help reduce?

TECSOUND 100 is mainly used to help reduce airborne noise, including voices, TV noise, music, office noise, machinery noise and general sound transfer between rooms or properties.

It can also help with impact noise and vibration control when used within the correct floor, wall or ceiling system. This makes it suitable for footsteps, movement, furniture noise, machinery vibration and structure-borne sound where the full build-up is designed correctly.

Where can TECSOUND 100 be used?

TECSOUND 100 can be used across residential, commercial and specialist acoustic projects. It is especially useful where a heavier, flexible mass layer is needed without creating an excessively bulky build-up.

  • High-performance floor soundproofing systems
  • Party wall soundproofing
  • Ceiling soundproofing build-ups
  • Studios, music rooms and media rooms
  • Home cinemas and home gyms
  • Flats, apartments and multi-tenant buildings
  • Commercial offices, meeting rooms and shared workspaces
  • Plant rooms, machinery areas and vibration-dampening applications where suitable
  • Specialist acoustic applications such as vehicles, enclosures and ductwork where appropriate

Why choose TECSOUND 100 instead of TECSOUND 50 or 70?

TECSOUND 100 is the heaviest non-adhesive membrane in the Tecsound range. It adds 10kg/m² of acoustic mass, compared with 5kg/m² for TECSOUND 50 and 7kg/m² for TECSOUND 70.

This makes it a strong choice for demanding projects where maximum mass is preferred, especially in high-noise environments, studios, floors, shared buildings and commercial applications. If you need a lighter membrane for moderate noise control, TECSOUND 50 or TECSOUND 70 may be suitable. If you need the highest mass option, TECSOUND 100 is the stronger choice.

Why choose the non-adhesive version?

The non-adhesive version is useful where you do not need a peel-and-stick backing, or where the membrane will be held in place by the surrounding construction layers. It is commonly used in floor build-ups, board sandwich systems, wall linings and projects where the installer wants more control over the fixing method.

This makes TECSOUND 100 Non-Adhesive Membrane a versatile option for professional installers and experienced DIY users who need a heavy, flexible acoustic barrier for a complete soundproofing system.

How to Install TECSOUND 100 Non-Adhesive Acoustic Membrane

TECSOUND 100 Non-Adhesive Membrane is a heavy-duty acoustic membrane designed to provide high levels of airborne noise reduction through walls, ceilings and floors. With a mass of 10kg/m², it is the heaviest option in the Tecsound non-adhesive range and is suitable for demanding soundproofing projects such as home cinemas, recording studios, offices, home gyms, flats and high-noise environments.

Unlike the self-adhesive SY version, TECSOUND 100 does not have a peel-and-stick backing. It can be installed using a suitable adhesive, mechanically fixed where appropriate, laid within a floor build-up, or held securely between layers as part of a complete acoustic system.

What You’ll Need

  • TECSOUND 100 Non-Adhesive Acoustic Membrane
  • Measuring tape
  • Sharp Stanley knife or utility blade
  • Straight edge or metal ruler
  • Suitable adhesive, such as SM20 glue, compatible contact adhesive or acoustic adhesive
  • Trowel, brush or roller for applying adhesive
  • Hand roller for pressing the membrane into place
  • Gloves for handling
  • Acoustic sealant for edges and gaps
  • Acoustic putty pads for socket boxes, if required
  • Tecsound jointing tape or suitable acoustic tape, if required

Before You Start

Allow TECSOUND 100 to acclimatise in the room for around 24 hours before installation where possible. This helps the membrane settle to the room temperature and makes it easier to cut, handle and position.

TECSOUND 100 is a very heavy acoustic membrane, with an approximate roll weight of around 48kg. Large sections can be difficult to lift and control, especially on ceilings or overhead areas. For larger installations, we recommend working in pairs and cutting the membrane into manageable sections before fitting.

Step 1: Prepare the Surface

Before installing the membrane, make sure the surface is properly prepared. The surface should be:

  • Clean — remove dust, dirt, grease, debris and loose particles.
  • Dry — avoid installing onto damp or wet surfaces.
  • Smooth and stable — fill cracks, gaps and uneven areas before fitting.
  • Structurally sound — do not apply to weak, crumbling or unstable surfaces.

TECSOUND 100 can be installed with suitable plasterboard, masonry, timber, MDF, concrete and board systems. Good preparation is important because dust, moisture or loose material can reduce the effectiveness of the adhesive or fixing method.

Step 2: Measure and Cut the Membrane

  1. Measure the area where TECSOUND 100 will be installed.
  2. Mark the required size on the membrane.
  3. Use a sharp Stanley knife or utility blade with a straight edge to cut the membrane neatly.
  4. Cut accurately to reduce gaps, waste and weak points in the finished system.

Due to the higher mass of TECSOUND 100, cut smaller sections for ceiling installations or awkward areas. This makes the membrane easier to lift, align and secure.

Step 3: Apply the Adhesive or Fixing Method

Choose a suitable adhesive or fixing method for your application. For wall and ceiling installations, a compatible acoustic adhesive, SM20 glue or strong contact adhesive may be used. Always follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions for coverage, open time, drying time and surface compatibility.

  1. Apply adhesive to one section at a time so it does not dry before the membrane is positioned.
  2. Use a trowel, brush or roller to create an even adhesive layer.
  3. If using contact adhesive, apply it to both the surface and the back of the membrane if required by the adhesive instructions.
  4. Allow the adhesive to become ready for bonding before positioning the membrane.

For floor systems or board sandwich constructions, the membrane may be laid or held in place by the surrounding layers rather than bonded directly. The correct method depends on the full soundproofing build-up.

Step 4: Fix TECSOUND 100 in Place

  1. Carefully align the first section of membrane with the installation area.
  2. Press the membrane firmly onto the prepared adhesive or into position within the system.
  3. Smooth the membrane as you work to reduce air pockets and wrinkles.
  4. Use a hand roller or firm pressure to ensure good contact across the full surface.
  5. Continue fitting each section, keeping coverage as continuous as possible.

Work slowly and methodically. Because TECSOUND 100 is heavy, avoid trying to position too much material at once, especially when working on ceilings or vertical surfaces.

Step 5: Butt and Seal the Joints

Where sheets meet, butt the TECSOUND 100 edges tightly together to maintain a continuous acoustic barrier. Avoid leaving gaps between sheets, as gaps can reduce the overall soundproofing result.

For improved acoustic performance and airtightness, seal the joints using Tecsound jointing tape or a suitable acoustic tape. Additional adhesive may also be used along seams where required by the installation method.

Step 6: Trim Edges and Openings

Once the membrane is fitted, trim excess material around edges, corners, sockets, switches, pipes or openings using a sharp blade and straight edge.

Small gaps can reduce soundproofing performance, so seal weak points carefully. Use acoustic sealant around perimeter edges, joints and small gaps. Where electrical sockets or switches are present, use acoustic putty pads to help reduce sound leakage through the back boxes.

Step 7: Add the Next Layer

Once TECSOUND 100 has been installed, it can be covered or incorporated into the next part of the soundproofing system. Depending on your project, this may include:

  • Acoustic plasterboard
  • Standard plasterboard
  • MDF or timber board
  • Floating floor layers
  • Acoustic underlay systems
  • Resilient bars or furring channels
  • Acoustic mineral wool within the cavity
  • Additional acoustic membrane layers where specified

TECSOUND 100 performs best as part of a complete acoustic system. For example, wall and ceiling systems may combine acoustic membrane, insulation, resilient isolation products, plasterboard layers and acoustic sealant. Floor systems may combine TECSOUND 100 with floating floor layers, underlay and sealed perimeter edges.

Installation Tips

  • Work in pairs — TECSOUND 100 is heavy and can be difficult to handle alone.
  • Use smaller sections for ceilings — this makes lifting, positioning and bonding easier.
  • Check adhesive compatibility — use a suitable adhesive for both the membrane and the surface.
  • Apply firm pressure — use a roller to improve contact and reduce trapped air.
  • Keep coverage continuous — gaps can reduce acoustic performance.
  • Seal all edges and penetrations — sound can pass through small openings.
  • Use sharp blades — clean cuts make fitting easier and reduce waste.

Important Soundproofing Note

Soundproofing performance depends on the full system, not just one individual product. TECSOUND 100 adds a high level of acoustic mass, but the final result will also depend on the existing structure, supporting materials, installation quality and how well gaps and flanking paths are controlled.
