Norseal NOR905 Graphite Radius Hinge Pad – 0.5mm, 100 × 30mm
Norseal NOR905 Graphite Radius Hinge Pad is a pre-cut intumescent pad designed for installation behind a compatible radius-corner hinge blade within a fire-resisting timber doorset.
The pad creates a thin protective layer between the metal hinge blade and the timber door leaf or frame. Under fire conditions, the graphite intumescent material reacts within the hinge recess, helping protect the surrounding timber and support the performance of the complete doorset.
Each pad is supplied in one fixed configuration:
- 100mm long
- 30mm wide
- 0.5mm thick
- Radius-corner profile
- Dark Grey graphite material
- Self-adhesive backing
Fire-Door Hinge Protection
Fitting a hinge requires recesses to be formed in the door leaf and frame. These recesses remove part of the original timber construction and introduce metal components that can transfer heat into the surrounding material.
Where required by the hinge or doorset evidence, the NOR905 pad is positioned directly behind the hinge blade to help:
- Protect timber immediately behind the hinge
- Limit direct heat transfer from the metal blade
- Protect the machined hinge recess
- Maintain intumescent protection around the hinge fixing area
- Reproduce the tested or assessed hinge arrangement
0.5mm Graphite Construction
The NOR905 uses a slim 0.5mm graphite intumescent material. This provides concealed protection without adding the greater thickness associated with some alternative hinge-pad products.
The 0.5mm thickness must only be used where it is permitted by the supporting hinge and doorset evidence. A thicker pad is not automatically better, and a thinner pad must not be substituted where the tested arrangement requires another specification.
Radius-Corner Profile
The rounded corners are designed to correspond with a compatible radius-corner hinge blade.
Before ordering, compare the pad with:
- The length and width of the hinge blade
- The corner radius of the hinge
- The hinge-recess dimensions
- The screw-hole arrangement
- The hinge manufacturer’s fire-performance evidence
Do not use the radius pad behind a square-corner hinge where the shape would leave part of the required protection area uncovered.
Self-Adhesive Backing
The self-adhesive backing helps hold the pad accurately within the hinge recess while the hinge blade is positioned and mechanically secured.
The adhesive is an installation aid only. It does not provide the structural fixing for the hinge and does not replace the specified hinge screws.
The receiving surface should be clean, dry, flat and free from dust, grease and loose timber fibres.
Supplied Individually
Each ordered item contains one hinge pad.
The required quantity depends on the tested or assessed doorset arrangement. Protection may be required:
- Behind the hinge blade in the door leaf
- Behind the corresponding blade in the frame
- Behind both blades of each hinge
Do not assume that one pad is sufficient for one complete hinge. Check the hinge certificate, doorset schedule or door manufacturer’s instructions before calculating the quantity.
Fire-Performance Requirements
Norseal publishes the graphite hinge-pad range for installation behind hinge blades on fire-resisting doorsets, with fire resistance referenced in accordance with BS 476-22.
The pad does not independently provide an FD30, FD60 or other fire-resistance classification. Performance depends on the complete assembly, including:
- The door-leaf and frame construction
- The hinge manufacturer and model
- The number and position of the hinges
- The specified graphite-pad thickness
- Whether one or both hinge blades are protected
- The screw type, length and fixing pattern
- The perimeter intumescent-seal arrangement
- The quality of installation
Replacement and Maintenance Work
Whenever a hinge is removed or replaced on a fire-resisting door, the concealed intumescent protection should be inspected.
Replace the pad if it is:
- Missing or incomplete
- Torn, punctured or delaminated
- Wet or heavily contaminated
- Permanently compressed or distorted
- Incorrectly positioned
- Unsuitable for the replacement hinge

How to Install the Norseal NOR905 Graphite Radius Hinge Pad
The NOR905 hinge pad must be installed in the position required by the hinge certificate, door manufacturer’s instructions or doorset assessment.
Before removing the hinge, establish whether the pad is required behind the door-leaf blade, the frame blade or both blades.
1. Verify the Hinge Specification
Confirm:
- The hinge is approved for the fire-resisting doorset.
- The hinge blade measures 100 × 30mm.
- The hinge has a compatible radius-corner profile.
- The evidence specifies a 0.5mm graphite pad.
- The required pad locations are known.
- The correct hinge screws are available.
Do not select the pad solely because it appears to fit the hinge recess.
2. Support the Door
Support the door securely before loosening or removing a hinge.
Remove and refit one hinge at a time unless the applicable door-installation procedure requires another method.
Supporting the door helps prevent:
- Excessive loading on the remaining hinges
- Movement of the door within the frame
- Damage to the screw fixings
- Changes to the required perimeter gaps
3. Remove the Hinge Blade
Remove the approved screws and carefully lift the relevant hinge blade from its recess.
Retain screws that remain suitable for reuse. Replace damaged fixings only with screws permitted by the hinge and doorset evidence.
4. Inspect the Hinge Recess
Check that the recess is:
- Correctly sized for the hinge blade
- Flat and free from raised timber fibres

- Structurally sound around each screw position

5. Clean the Receiving Surface
Remove dust and loose fibres using a suitable brush or vacuum.
The receiving surface must be clean and dry before the self-adhesive pad is applied.
Do not install the pad over:
- Grease or oil
- Wet timber
- Loose paint or coatings
- Splinters or raised fibres
- Old adhesive that prevents flat contact
6. Dry-Fit the Pad
Position the pad within the hinge recess before removing the release liner.
Confirm that:
- The 100 × 30mm dimensions match the hinge blade.
- The rounded corners align with the hinge profile.
- The pad lies flat without folding.
- The required hinge area is covered.
- The pad does not project into the operating door gap.
- The hinge can sit correctly over the 0.5mm material.
Do not trim or reshape the pad unless this is expressly permitted by the hinge or doorset evidence.
7. Apply the Pad
Remove the adhesive release liner without touching or contaminating the adhesive surface.
Align the pad carefully within the recess and press it firmly into place.
Ensure that:
- The pad remains centred behind the hinge blade.
- The radius corners are correctly aligned.
- The graphite material lies flat without creases.
- The adhesive makes continuous contact.
- The pad does not overlap the edge of the recess.
8. Refit the Hinge Blade
Position the hinge blade directly over the installed pad and align it with the approved fixing holes.
Refit the specified screws progressively and evenly.
Confirm that:
- The hinge blade sits correctly within the recess.
- The pad remains flat and correctly positioned.
- The screws achieve secure fixing into sound material.
- The hinge is not distorted.
- The screws are not overtightened.

9. Protect the Corresponding Blade Where Required
Where the supporting evidence requires a pad behind both hinge blades, repeat the process behind the corresponding blade in the door leaf or frame.
Use one separate pad for each protected hinge blade.
10. Test the Door
Remove the temporary support and operate the door carefully.
Confirm that:
- The hinges move freely without binding.
- The door opens through its required range.
- The door closes fully into the frame.
- The latch engages correctly.
- The self-closing device remains effective.
- The required perimeter gaps remain within specification.
- No hinge screw has loosened.
Final Inspection
Verify that:
