Norsound NOR810S Automatic Drop Seal – 12 × 20mm

Norsound NOR810S Automatic Drop Seal – 12 × 20mm is a compact, mortised door-bottom seal designed for installation into the bottom edge of acoustic timber doorsets.

The slim aluminium profile is rebated into the door leaf and secured using two fixing screws. When the door closes, a single mechanical actuator lowers the grey TPE gasket onto the floor, sill or threshold plate.

As the door opens, the gasket retracts into the aluminium housing, helping maintain floor clearance and preventing the seal from dragging continuously across the finished surface.

The NOR810S is particularly suitable where the larger 14 × 35mm NOR810 profile cannot be accommodated within the door construction.

What is the NOR810S used for?

The NOR810S is designed to treat the otherwise open gap beneath a timber door.

An untreated threshold gap can allow:

  • Airborne sound to pass between adjoining rooms
  • Cold smoke to move beneath the closed door
  • Draughts and uncontrolled airflow
  • Light to remain visible beneath the door
  • Dust and small airborne particles to pass through the gap

The automatic gasket lowers only when the door closes, providing a practical alternative to a permanently exposed door-bottom seal.

How does the NOR810S work?

The NOR810S contains a mechanically operated internal drop mechanism.

An adjustable actuator is positioned at the hinge side of the door. As the door reaches its closed position, the actuator contacts the frame and activates the mechanism.

The grey TPE gasket then lowers towards the floor or threshold.

When the door opens, pressure is released from the actuator and the gasket retracts into the aluminium housing.

The product requires:

  • No electrical supply
  • No wiring
  • No external control unit
  • No floor-mounted operating mechanism

Compact 12 × 20mm profile

The NOR810S has a nominal profile size of:

  • 12mm wide
  • 20mm deep

This smaller profile requires a significantly shallower mortise than the standard NOR810, which measures 14 × 35mm.

The reduced dimensions can make the NOR810S suitable for doors where:

  • The bottom rail has limited machining depth
  • A compact concealed installation is required
  • A 35mm-deep drop seal cannot be accommodated
  • The required threshold gap is no greater than 12mm

The door must still have sufficient structural material to receive the 12 × 20mm routed groove.

Maximum gap coverage

The NOR810S can cover a threshold gap of up to 12mm.

The seal should be adjusted so that the gasket makes light and continuous contact with the finished floor or threshold when the door is fully closed.

The gasket should not be forced down further than necessary.

Excessive actuator travel can:

  • Increase the force required to close the door
  • Prevent the latch from engaging correctly
  • Fold or distort the gasket
  • Increase wear on the internal mechanism
  • Cause unnecessary friction against the threshold

Where the threshold gap exceeds 12mm, a different drop seal or a revised threshold arrangement may be required.

Acoustic door applications

Norseal specifies the NOR810S for the bottom edge of acoustic timber doorsets.

The gasket helps reduce sound leakage by closing the air path beneath the door when it is shut.

The individual drop seal does not have a universal standalone decibel rating.

Final sound reduction depends on the complete door assembly, including:

  • The construction and mass of the door leaf
  • The door frame
  • The acoustic seals around the head and jambs
  • The threshold or floor surface
  • The adjustment of the TPE gasket
  • The door-to-frame gaps
  • Glazing and ironmongery
  • The frame-to-wall junction
  • The quality of installation

For effective acoustic performance, the entire perimeter of the doorset should be sealed rather than treating only the bottom edge.

Smoke-sealing applications

Norseal states that the NOR810S meets the smoke requirements of BS 8214 within suitable doorset arrangements.

When correctly installed and adjusted, the TPE gasket helps restrict smoke passing through the gap beneath the closed door.

The drop seal must be used alongside the other smoke-control components required by the doorset, which may include:

  • Perimeter smoke seals around the door head and jambs
  • Sealed glazing systems
  • Protected letter plates and air-transfer grilles
  • Correctly detailed lock and latch preparations
  • A sealed frame-to-wall junction

The threshold surface must allow the gasket to make continuous contact across the complete width of the door.

Fire-door applications

Norseal states that the NOR810S is suitable for use on most fire doors.

This does not give the individual seal a standalone fire-resistance rating.

Before routing a fire-resisting door, confirm:

  • That the NOR810S is permitted by the doorset evidence
  • That a 12mm-wide × 20mm-deep mortise is permitted
  • That the door has a suitable bottom rail or lipping
  • That machining will not damage the door core
  • That the specified threshold gap will be maintained
  • That the screw-fixing arrangement is permitted
  • That any required intumescent protection remains intact

Machining an unverified fire door can invalidate the certification, assessment or warranty applying to the doorset.

Rebated and screw-fixed installation

The NOR810S is mortised into a routed groove along the bottom edge of the door.

Unlike the larger NOR810, which is retained primarily through its end components, the NOR810S is secured using two fixing screws.

The manufacturer’s fitting arrangement includes:

  • One automatic drop seal
  • One push-fit end cap
  • Two fixing screws

The end cap is fitted at the non-hinge side after the seal has been inserted and screw-fixed.

Single mechanical actuation

The NOR810S uses one adjustable actuator.

The actuator is positioned at the hinge side and operates as the door closes against the frame.

The amount of gasket travel can be altered using a screwdriver:

  • Clockwise — reduces the drop distance.
  • Anti-clockwise — increases the drop distance.

The mechanism can also be deactivated by removing the actuator, although this prevents the seal from lowering and therefore removes its threshold-sealing function.

TPE sealing gasket

The flexible gasket is manufactured from grey TPE.

TPE, or thermoplastic elastomer, combines flexible sealing behaviour with the processing characteristics of a thermoplastic material.

The gasket provides:

  • Flexible contact with the threshold
  • Recovery after repeated operation
  • A continuous contact surface beneath the closed door
  • Compatibility with the retractable drop mechanism

The gasket should be kept free from:

  • Cuts and tears
  • Paint and varnish
  • Adhesive contamination
  • Metal swarf
  • Timber dust
  • Accumulated floor debris

Mill-finish aluminium housing

The internal mechanism is contained within a mill-finish aluminium profile.

The aluminium housing provides:

  • A rigid structure for the drop mechanism
  • A compact concealed installation
  • Resistance to normal operational wear
  • A lightweight profile suitable for timber doors

Once fitted, most of the aluminium housing is concealed within the bottom edge of the door.

Suitable threshold surfaces

The NOR810S can close against a suitable:

  • Smooth finished floor
  • Door sill
  • Low-profile threshold plate
  • Level floor transition

A threshold plate may be beneficial where the existing floor is:

  • Carpeted
  • Uneven
  • Worn
  • Interrupted by grout joints
  • Formed from two different floor finishes
  • Too soft to provide consistent gasket contact

The actuator should be adjusted only after the final floor or threshold surface has been completed.

Available lengths

The NOR810S is available in the following standard lengths:

  • 325mm
  • 425mm
  • 525mm
  • 625mm
  • 725mm
  • 825mm
  • 925mm
  • 1025mm
  • 1125mm
  • 1225mm

The closest suitable length should be selected according to the measured width of the door and the permitted cut-back.

Cut-back limits

Most NOR810S lengths can be shortened by up to 150mm.

The shorter models have reduced cut-back allowances:

  • 325mm seal — maximum cut-back of 40mm.
  • 425mm seal — maximum cut-back of 140mm.
  • 525mm to 1225mm seals — maximum cut-back of 150mm.

The exact limit shown on the individual product label must always be checked before cutting.

Cutting beyond the permitted limit can damage the internal mechanism and prevent the seal from operating.

NOR810S or NOR810S+?

The NOR810S has a profile size of 12 × 20mm and covers gaps of up to 12mm.

The NOR810S+ is a separate, deeper product with a nominal profile size of 12 × 30mm.

The two products should not be treated as interchangeable.

Select the correct version according to:

  • The available machining depth
  • The threshold gap
  • The doorset specification
  • The required supplied length
  • The applicable fire and smoke evidence

NOR810S or NOR810?

The standard NOR810 measures 14 × 35mm and can cover larger threshold gaps of up to 20mm.

The NOR810S is more compact at 12 × 20mm and covers gaps of up to 12mm.

Choose the version permitted by the doorset evidence and suitable for the door construction.

The approximate minimum finished lengths are calculated from the manufacturer’s maximum cut-back figures. Always follow the cut-back value printed on the individual product label.

Acoustic Performance Note

The NOR810S is designed for the bottom edge of acoustic timber doorsets.

No universal standalone decibel rating should be assigned to the individual seal.

Final sound reduction depends on:

  • The construction of the door leaf
  • The frame
  • The perimeter seals
  • The threshold surface
  • The drop-seal adjustment
  • The surrounding construction
  • The glazing and ironmongery
  • The quality of installation

Smoke Performance Note

The NOR810S meets the smoke requirements of BS 8214 within suitable complete doorset arrangements.

The grey TPE gasket must make continuous contact with the finished floor, sill or threshold when the door is closed.

A suitable smoke-sealing system will also normally be required around the door head and jambs.

Fire Performance Note

Norseal states that the NOR810S is suitable for use on most fire doors.

This does not provide a standalone fire rating.

Before installation:

  • Confirm that the NOR810S is permitted by the fire-door evidence.
  • Confirm that the 12 × 20mm mortise is permitted.
  • Check the required bottom lipping or rail construction.
  • Follow the specified screw-fixing arrangement.
  • Do not damage the door core or required intumescent materials.
  • Maintain the threshold gap stated by the doorset evidence.

Threshold Compatibility

The NOR810S can close against a suitable floor, sill or threshold plate.

A threshold plate may improve sealing where the existing floor is:

  • Carpeted
  • Uneven
  • Interrupted by joints
  • Worn or damaged
  • Formed from different adjoining floor materials

The actuator should be adjusted after the final threshold surface has been completed.

Handling and Storage

Store the NOR810S:

  • Flat and fully supported
  • In a clean and dry location
  • Protected from bending and impact damage
  • With the actuator protected from damage
  • With the TPE gasket protected from cutting and crushing
  • Away from timber dust, metal swarf and wet trades

Do not allow debris to enter the internal drop mechanism.

How to Install the Norsound NOR810S Automatic Drop Seal – 12 × 20mm

Norsound NOR810S Automatic Drop Seal is installed into a 12mm-wide × 20mm-deep routed groove along the full width of the bottom edge of a suitable timber door leaf.

The seal is cut to approximately 3mm less than the measured door width, inserted into the groove and secured using the two supplied fixing screws.

The actuator must be positioned at the hinge side, with the push-fit end cap installed at the non-hinge side.

Before You Start

Inspect the door, frame and threshold.

Confirm that:

  • The door opens, closes and latches correctly
  • The hinges and frame are secure
  • The door can accommodate a 12mm-wide × 20mm-deep mortise
  • The groove will not cut into glazing, rails, fixings or hardware
  • The selected seal can be shortened to the required length
  • The threshold gap does not exceed 12mm
  • The actuator can be positioned at the hinge side
  • The floor or threshold provides a firm sealing surface
  • The proposed machining is permitted by the doorset evidence

Do not machine a fire-rated, hollow-core, glazed or specialist door without confirming that the installation is permitted.

Step 1: Check the Supplied Components

Confirm that the package contains:

  • One NOR810S automatic drop seal
  • One push-fit end cap
  • Two fixing screws

Identify:

  • The actuator end
  • The non-actuator cutting end
  • The grey TPE gasket
  • The maximum cut-back stated on the product label

Do not begin cutting until the permitted cut-back has been checked.

Step 2: Confirm the Cut-Back Limit

The maximum permitted cut-back depends on the supplied length:

  • 325mm version — maximum 40mm.
  • 425mm version — maximum 140mm.
  • 525mm to 1225mm versions — maximum 150mm.

The product label takes priority where it states a different or more restrictive limit.

Cutting beyond the permitted point may damage the internal mechanism.

Step 3: Remove and Support the Door

Remove the door from its hinges where necessary.

Lay the door securely on its side and restrain it firmly.

Support the complete length of the door to avoid twisting or damage while routing.

Protect:

  • The door faces
  • Decorative finishes
  • Glazing
  • Ironmongery
  • The corners and edges

Step 4: Measure the Door Width

Measure the width of the door along its bottom edge.

Record this measurement as L.

Measure at the exact position where the drop seal will be installed rather than assuming the door is perfectly square.

Step 5: Mark the Routed Groove

Mark a straight groove along the complete width of the door bottom.

The required mortise is:

  • 12mm wide
  • 20mm deep

Check that sufficient door material will remain on both faces after the groove has been routed.

Step 6: Route the Mortise

Use a router, 12mm cutter and suitable guide to machine the groove.

Remove the timber in controlled passes rather than attempting the full 20mm depth in one operation.

Maintain:

  • A straight routed groove
  • A consistent 12mm width
  • A consistent 20mm depth
  • A clean and level base
  • Correct alignment across the door width

Avoid cutting into structural rails, glazing systems, fixings or other door components.

Step 7: Clean and Inspect the Groove

Remove all timber dust, chips and loose fibres.

Use a brush or vacuum to clear the mortise.

Check that:

  • The aluminium housing can enter the groove without excessive force
  • The groove is not wider than required
  • The profile remains straight when inserted
  • The bottom of the groove is clear
  • No debris can enter the internal mechanism

Step 8: Calculate the Finished Seal Length

The manufacturer’s fitting guide instructs the seal to be cut to:

L − 3mm

Measure from the actuator end and mark the aluminium housing at the calculated length.

For example:

  • If the door measures 825mm, mark the seal at 822mm.
  • If the door measures 926mm, mark the seal at 923mm.

Confirm that the required cut remains within the permitted cut-back limit.

Step 9: Confirm the Correct Cutting End

The measurement is taken from the actuator end.

The excess material should therefore be removed from the opposite, non-actuator end.

Before cutting, reconfirm:

  • The door measurement
  • The L − 3mm calculation
  • The actuator end
  • The cutting end
  • The maximum cut-back

Do not shorten the actuator end.

Step 10: Withdraw the TPE Gasket

Partially remove or slide the flexible gasket away from the cutting line.

Move enough gasket clear of the saw to prevent accidental damage.

Do not:

  • Stretch the gasket excessively
  • Cut the gasket at the same time as the aluminium housing
  • Damage the internal carrier
  • Allow swarf to enter the mechanism

Step 11: Cut the Aluminium Housing

Support the seal securely and cut the aluminium housing squarely at the marked position.

Use a suitable fine-tooth saw.

After cutting:

  • Remove sharp edges and burrs
  • Remove all aluminium swarf
  • Check that the housing remains straight
  • Check that the mechanism still moves freely
  • Ensure no debris remains inside the seal

Step 12: Replace and Trim the Gasket

Return the TPE gasket to its natural position within the housing.

Trim it cleanly to the finished length.

Do not stretch the gasket while measuring or cutting, as it may retract and finish too short.

Check that the gasket remains:

  • Straight
  • Continuous
  • Free from cuts and tears
  • Correctly located within its carrier

Step 13: Insert the Seal

Place the NOR810S into the routed groove.

Position the actuator at the hinge side of the door.

Check that:

  • The aluminium housing sits fully within the mortise
  • The profile is straight
  • The gasket is not trapped
  • The mechanism moves freely
  • The fixing positions align with sound timber

Step 14: Screw-Fix the Seal

Mark and drill suitable pilot holes where required.

Secure the drop seal using the two fixing screws supplied.

Tighten the screws evenly.

Do not overtighten them, as this may:

  • Distort the aluminium housing
  • Restrict the internal mechanism
  • Damage the door edge
  • Pull the seal out of alignment

Step 15: Fit the End Cap

Push the supplied end cap into place at the non-hinge side of the seal.

Check that the end cap is fully seated and does not interfere with the gasket or internal mechanism.

Step 16: Rehang the Door

Return the door to its frame and secure it correctly to the hinges.

Check that:

  • The door hangs squarely
  • The actuator contacts the hinge-side frame
  • The gasket remains retracted while the door is open
  • The door passes freely over the floor
  • The door closes and latches correctly

Step 17: Test the Initial Drop

Close the door slowly while observing the gasket.

The seal should:

  • Remain retracted while the door is open
  • Begin lowering as the actuator contacts the frame
  • Touch the floor or threshold as the door closes
  • Make contact across the width of the door
  • Retract again as the door opens

Step 18: Adjust the Actuator

Use a screwdriver to adjust the actuator.

Make small adjustments:

  • Turn clockwise to reduce the drop distance.
  • Turn anti-clockwise to increase the drop distance.

Close and open the door after every adjustment.

Continue until the gasket touches the floor or threshold without being compressed excessively.

Step 19: Check Threshold Contact

Close the door and inspect the complete gasket.

Confirm that:

  • The hinge-side end contacts the threshold
  • The closing-side end contacts the threshold
  • The central section contacts the threshold
  • No visible open gaps remain
  • The gasket is not folded sideways
  • The door still closes and latches correctly

Where the floor is uneven or compressible, install a suitable threshold plate instead of over-adjusting the drop seal.

Step 20: Complete the Final Door Check

Operate the door several times.

Confirm that:

  • The door opens freely
  • The gasket retracts fully
  • The seal does not drag continuously across the floor
  • The door closes completely
  • The latch engages correctly
  • The gasket makes continuous threshold contact
  • The fixing screws remain secure
  • The end cap remains fitted
  • The actuator remains aligned
  • The mechanism does not over-travel

Deactivating the Drop Seal

The manufacturer states that the NOR810S can be deactivated completely by removing the actuator.

When the actuator is removed, the gasket will not lower automatically.

Deactivation therefore removes the acoustic and smoke-sealing function at the threshold and should not be used where the operating seal is required by the doorset specification.

Installing with a Threshold Plate

Where a threshold plate is required, fit and secure it before completing the final actuator adjustment.

The threshold plate should:

  • Provide a firm and level contact surface
  • Extend beneath the complete gasket width
  • Remain securely fixed
  • Allow the door to open and close freely
  • Comply with applicable accessibility requirements

Readjust the NOR810S after the final threshold has been installed.

Installing with Perimeter Seals

The NOR810S treats only the gap beneath the door.

Suitable perimeter seals will normally also be required around the:

  • Door head
  • Hinge-side jamb
  • Closing-side jamb
  • Meeting stiles on relevant double doors

Use the complete sealing arrangement specified by the applicable acoustic, smoke or fire doorset evidence.

Installation Tips

  • Confirm that the door can accommodate a 12 × 20mm mortise.
  • Check the fire-door evidence before machining.
  • Choose a supplied length that can be shortened within its limit.
  • Remember that the 325mm version can be shortened by only 40mm.
  • Remember that the 425mm version is limited to 140mm.
  • Cut the housing to the measured door width minus 3mm.
  • Measure from the actuator end.
  • Cut only the non-actuator end.
  • Position the actuator at the hinge side.
  • Protect the TPE gasket while cutting the aluminium.
  • Remove all timber dust and aluminium swarf.
  • Use both supplied fixing screws.
  • Fit the end cap at the non-hinge side.
  • Adjust the actuator in small increments.
  • Turn clockwise to reduce the drop.
  • Turn anti-clockwise to increase the drop.
  • Do not over-compress the gasket.
  • Check that the door continues to close and latch correctly.

Maintenance Advice

Inspect and operate the NOR810S regularly as part of the door-maintenance programme.

Check for:

  • Loose fixing screws
  • Movement of the aluminium housing
  • A loose or missing end cap
  • Damage to the TPE gasket
  • Damage or misalignment at the actuator
  • Debris beneath the gasket
  • Failure of the gasket to retract
  • Loss of contact with the threshold
  • Excessive gasket compression
  • Changes in the door alignment
  • Failure of the door to close or latch

Clean the gasket and threshold using a soft cloth and a suitable mild cleaning product.

Do not apply unapproved oil, grease or lubricant to the internal mechanism.

Important Performance Note

Correct machining, cutting, fixing and actuator adjustment are essential to the operation of the NOR810S.

The product does not independently create an acoustically rated, smoke-control or fire-resisting door.

Final performance depends on:

  • The construction of the door leaf
  • The door frame
  • The perimeter sealing system
  • The threshold surface
  • The adjustment of the TPE gasket
  • The ironmongery and glazing
  • The surrounding wall construction
  • The quality of installation and maintenance

For certified doorsets, install the NOR810S only in accordance with the applicable test evidence, assessment, certification and door-manufacturer instructions.

Delivery & Returns FAQs

If you are not home when delivery is attempted, the courier will usually leave a card or contact you with the next steps.

Depending on the courier and service used, they may attempt re-delivery, leave the parcel in a safe place, or take it back to the depot.

For pallet deliveries, someone normally needs to be available to accept the goods, as these are delivered kerbside and cannot usually be left unattended.

If you need to make a change to your order, please contact us as soon as possible after placing it.

We can usually make changes before the order has been processed or dispatched, but once it has entered production, packing, or shipping, changes may no longer be possible.

Our team will let you know what can be amended and whether any additional charges apply.

If an item is currently out of stock, please contact us to check availability.

Some products can still be ordered on a lead time basis, while others may be temporarily unavailable from the supplier.

We will advise you on the expected timescale and whether a suitable alternative is available.

In some cases, parcel deliveries may be left with a neighbour if you have given delivery instructions and the courier allows it.

Pallet deliveries are less flexible, as they usually require the goods to be accepted in person at the delivery address.

If you would like delivery left with a neighbour where possible, please let us know in advance and we will note this on the order.
