Pyrocover 100 Cover Plate – RAL 9006

Pyrocover 100 Cover Plate – RAL 9006 is a pressed-steel louvred cover designed to provide a neat, protective and visually finished face over a compatible Pyrogrille 100 intumescent air-transfer grille.

The cover plate is face-fixed to the door, wall or duct surface around the installed air-transfer grille.

Its angled louvres help conceal the exposed black intumescent grille while continuing to permit airflow through the opening during normal building use.

The current stocked range is supplied in a fixed:

RAL 9006 White Aluminium finish

and is available in thirteen square and rectangular sizes.

What is the Pyrocover 100 used for?

The Pyrocover 100 is used as a decorative and protective facing over a compatible intumescent air-transfer grille.

It can help:

  • Conceal the exposed intumescent grille body
  • Cover the visible edges of the prepared aperture
  • Protect the grille from casual contact
  • Provide a more finished appearance
  • Reduce direct sight through the ventilation opening
  • Maintain normal airflow through the doorway, wall or duct

It may be fitted to suitable:

  • Fire-resisting timber doors
  • Fire-resisting walls and partitions
  • Ventilation ducts
  • Non-fire-rated air-transfer openings where an appropriate cover grille is required

The complete application must follow the relevant fire-test evidence, assessment and building design.

Designed for Pyrogrille 100 installations

The Pyrocover 100 is principally intended for use with a compatible Pyrogrille 100 intumescent air-transfer grille.

The Pyrogrille 100 remains open during ordinary conditions to allow air movement.

When exposed to fire conditions, its graphite-based intumescent material expands and closes the internal ventilation paths.

The Pyrocover 100 remains on the visible face of the installation and provides the finished louvred appearance.

The two products perform different functions:

  • Pyrogrille 100: provides the intumescent fire-protection component within the aperture.
  • Pyrocover 100: provides the visible decorative and protective facing.

The cover plate must not be used as a substitute for the intumescent air-transfer grille.

The cover plate is not independently fire rated

The Pyrocover 100 does not independently restore the fire resistance of an aperture.

Any fire performance belongs to the complete tested or assessed installation, including:

  • The fire-resisting door, wall or duct construction
  • The Pyrogrille 100 intumescent core
  • The approved aperture dimensions and position
  • The grille thickness and size
  • The mechanical fixings
  • The perimeter intumescent sealant
  • The cover-plate arrangement
  • The quality of installation

Do not assign an FD30, FD60 or FD120 rating to the cover plate alone.

Covering both faces

An intumescent air-transfer grille installed through a door or wall commonly has a visible face on both sides.

Where the specification requires both faces to be covered, install:

  • One compatible Pyrocover 100 on the first face
  • One compatible Pyrocover 100 on the opposite face

The cover plates are sold individually rather than as an automatic pair.

Confirm the required quantity before ordering.

Louvred construction

The pressed-steel cover incorporates angled ventilation louvres.

The louvres allow air to pass through the plate while helping limit a direct line of sight through the opening.

This can provide:

  • A more discreet appearance
  • Some visual screening between adjoining rooms
  • Protection for the intumescent grille behind
  • Continued passive airflow

The cover is not a security grille and should not be treated as providing resistance to forced entry.

Airflow considerations

The Pyrocover 100 must remain unobstructed so air can pass through its louvres.

Final airflow depends on:

  • The nominal cover-plate dimensions
  • The corresponding Pyrogrille 100 free area
  • The louvre geometry
  • The pressure difference across the opening
  • The surrounding ventilation system
  • Any additional screens or covers
  • Dirt or debris within the grille

The cover plate can introduce additional airflow resistance and should be included within the ventilation design.

Do not use the nominal face dimensions as a substitute for a calculated free-area or pressure-drop requirement.

RAL 9006 finish

The stocked cover plates have a fixed:

RAL 9006 White Aluminium finish

RAL 9006 has a silver or metallic aluminium appearance and is commonly used for ventilation grilles, architectural metalwork and associated building components.

The finish can coordinate with:

  • Satin Silver ironmongery
  • Aluminium door furniture
  • Silver ventilation products
  • Commercial door and wall finishes
  • Grey and neutral interior colour schemes

Appearance can vary according to lighting, coating texture and the surrounding materials.

Pressed-steel construction

The cover grille is formed from pressed steel to provide a rigid face-mounted component.

The steel construction helps:

  • Protect the intumescent grille from casual impact
  • Maintain the louvre shape
  • Provide a stable perimeter for screw fixing
  • Create a durable visible finish

The cover should remain flat and undistorted.

Bent or damaged louvres can affect appearance and airflow.

Internal-use considerations

Pressed-steel decorative cover grilles are normally intended for dry internal locations.

Do not assume that the standard RAL 9006 finish is suitable for:

  • Permanent external exposure
  • High or constant humidity
  • Swimming-pool environments
  • Wet rooms
  • Wash-down areas
  • Areas subject to regular condensation

A suitable weather-resistant or moisture-resistant alternative may be required for these environments.

Cold-smoke limitation

The Pyrocover 100 remains open during normal conditions and does not independently prevent cold smoke from passing through the opening.

It must not be described as a cold-smoke seal.

Where the door requires smoke containment, confirm that:

  • The complete doorset evidence permits an air-transfer grille
  • An approved cold-smoke-control arrangement is included
  • The fire strategy permits the ventilation opening
  • The installed system matches the applicable test or assessment

A standard open cover plate and intumescent grille should not automatically be fitted to a fire-and-smoke door.

Nominal size selection

The cover-plate size should be selected to suit the intended grille and aperture arrangement.

The stocked nominal sizes are:

  • 100 × 100mm
  • 150 × 150mm
  • 200 × 200mm
  • 250 × 150mm
  • 250 × 250mm
  • 300 × 150mm
  • 300 × 250mm
  • 300 × 300mm
  • 350 × 350mm
  • 400 × 400mm
  • 450 × 450mm
  • 500 × 500mm
  • 600 × 600mm

The stated dimensions should be treated as the nominal grille or opening size.

The external face dimensions may be larger because of the surrounding mounting flange.

Confirm the overall dimensions before checking:

  • Clearance from door edges
  • Clearance from glazing
  • Clearance from locks and hinges
  • Available wall or duct space
  • Compatibility with the selected Pyrogrille

Not every cover size matches every stocked 25mm Pyrogrille

The stocked Pyrocover 100 range includes sizes that are not identical to every stocked 25mm-thick Pyrogrille 100 option.

For example, the cover range includes 300 × 250mm, while some grille ranges use different nearby rectangular dimensions.

Do not select the cover plate solely because its dimensions appear similar.

Confirm compatibility using:

  • The exact Pyrogrille product code
  • The nominal opening dimensions
  • The cover-plate neck and flange dimensions
  • The supplier’s matching guidance
  • The applicable fire-test evidence

How to Install the Pyrocover 100 Cover Plate – RAL 9006

Pyrocover 100 Cover Plates are face-fixed centrally over a compatible intumescent air-transfer grille.

Where the installation requires covers on both sides of a door or wall, fit one plate to each face.

The cover must remain securely fixed without obstructing the grille’s airflow or damaging the underlying fire-resisting construction.

What You’ll Need

  • Pyrocover 100 plate in the approved nominal size
  • A second matching cover where both faces require treatment
  • The compatible installed Pyrogrille 100
  • The applicable fire-test or doorset evidence
  • Suitable fixing screws
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil or removable marker
  • Square or spirit level
  • Drill and suitable pilot drill bits
  • Screwdriver
  • Vacuum or soft brush
  • Clean, soft cloth
  • Safety glasses
  • Protective gloves

Before You Start

Confirm:

  • The intumescent grille is correctly installed.
  • The grille size matches the selected cover plate.
  • The cover plate’s external flange will fit the available surface.
  • The plate will not obstruct hinges, locks or other ironmongery.
  • The installation requires one or two cover plates.
  • The door, wall or duct evidence permits the selected arrangement.
  • The cover is free from dents, bent louvres and damaged coating.

Do not use the cover plate to conceal an incorrectly installed or damaged intumescent grille.

Step 1: Inspect the Installed Pyrogrille

Before fitting the cover, inspect the underlying air-transfer grille.

Confirm that:

  • The correct product and size have been installed.
  • The grille is square within the aperture.
  • All required mechanical fixings are present.
  • The perimeter fire-stopping seal is complete.
  • The intumescent material is undamaged.
  • No sealant obstructs the airflow openings.
  • The installation matches the applicable evidence.

Correct any defect before covering the grille.

Step 2: Confirm Cover Compatibility

Check the Pyrocover product code against the installed grille and aperture.

Confirm:

  • The nominal width
  • The nominal height
  • The cover neck or clear opening
  • The external flange dimensions
  • The fixing-hole arrangement

Do not force an incorrectly sized cover over the grille.

Step 3: Check the Required Quantity

Determine whether the project requires:

  • One cover plate on a single visible face
  • Two matching cover plates, one on each face

Where two covers are required, check that both have:

  • The same nominal dimensions
  • The same RAL 9006 finish
  • The same louvre orientation where applicable

Step 4: Determine the Louvre Orientation

Inspect the angled louvres and establish the intended orientation.

The cover is generally installed with the louvres running horizontally and deflecting downward.

This arrangement helps:

  • Provide visual screening
  • Reduce the direct view through the aperture
  • Create a consistent appearance

Use the orientation required by the product design and project specification.

Step 5: Position the Cover Centrally

Place the Pyrocover over the installed grille.

Centre it so that:

  • The grille is fully concealed.
  • The cover flange overlaps the aperture evenly.
  • The plate sits flat against the surface.
  • The louvres remain unobstructed.
  • The cover is level.
  • The fixing holes enter suitable material.

Use a spirit level or square to check its position.

Step 6: Check Door and Ironmongery Clearance

For a door installation, check that the cover remains clear of:

  • The door frame
  • The floor or threshold
  • Hinges
  • Locks and latches
  • Door closers
  • Pull handles and push plates
  • Glazing beads and apertures

Open and close the door carefully while holding the cover in place.

Step 7: Mark the Fixing Positions

Use the cover’s preformed fixing holes as templates.

Mark each fixing position accurately.

The fixings should enter suitable door, wall or duct material and must not:

  • Enter the active intumescent grille core
  • Damage the grille frame
  • Break through the opposite door face
  • Damage glazing or ironmongery
  • Compromise required door-edge material
  • Contact concealed services

Step 8: Drill Suitable Pilot Holes

Remove the cover and drill the marked pilot holes.

Select the bit diameter according to:

  • The supplied or specified fixing screws
  • The door, wall or duct material
  • The required fixing depth
  • The manufacturer’s fitting requirements

Remove all drilling dust and debris.

Step 9: Reposition the Cover

Return the cover plate to its marked location.

Check again that:

  • It is centred over the grille.
  • The louvres have the correct orientation.
  • The plate is level.
  • All fixing holes align.
  • The external flange sits flat.

Step 10: Secure the First Fixing

Insert the first screw loosely.

Do not tighten it fully.

Install a second fixing diagonally opposite to maintain the cover’s alignment.

Continue inserting the remaining screws loosely before final tightening.

Step 11: Tighten the Fixings Evenly

Tighten the screws progressively and evenly.

Do not overtighten.

Excessive tightening can:

  • Distort the pressed-steel cover
  • Pull the flange away from a flat plane
  • Damage the RAL 9006 finish
  • Crush the door or wall surface
  • Cause the louvres to twist

The completed cover should sit firmly without rocking or distortion.

Step 12: Fit the Opposite Cover

Where a second cover is required, repeat the process on the opposite face.

Align the second cover with the first so the installation appears consistent from both sides.

Do not use fixings so long that they:

  • Strike the opposite screws
  • Penetrate through the door leaf
  • Damage the underlying Pyrogrille

Step 13: Check Airflow Openings

Inspect all louvres after fixing.

Confirm that:

  • No louvre is bent closed.
  • No sealant obstructs the cover.
  • No protective packaging remains.
  • No screw head interferes with the air path.
  • The intumescent grille remains visible through the louvres where expected.

Do not fill any louvre with sealant or decorative material.

Step 14: Check Door Operation

For door installations, open and close the door several times.

Confirm that:

  • The door opens freely.
  • The cover does not contact the frame or floor.
  • The door closes completely.
  • The latch engages correctly.
  • The self-closing device remains effective.
  • The added covers have not caused misalignment.

Step 15: Complete the Final Inspection

Check that:

  • The correct cover size has been installed.
  • The RAL 9006 finish is undamaged.
  • The cover is centred and level.
  • All required fixings are present.
  • No fixing is loose or proud.
  • The louvres are unobstructed.
  • The underlying grille remains securely installed.
  • The installation matches the applicable evidence.

Installation Tips

  • Confirm compatibility before drilling any fixing holes.
  • Treat the listed size as nominal until the flange dimensions are checked.
  • Position the plate centrally over the intumescent grille.
  • Keep the louvres horizontal and correctly orientated.
  • Use all required fixing holes.
  • Use suitable screws for the door, wall or duct material.
  • Do not screw into the active intumescent core.
  • Do not overtighten and distort the pressed-steel plate.
  • Fit one plate to each face where the specification requires two.
  • Keep the airflow path clear.
  • Do not paint or seal over the louvres.
  • Record the product code and installation location for inspection purposes.

Maintenance Advice

Inspect the Pyrocover periodically.

Check for:

  • Loose or missing fixing screws
  • Bent or damaged louvres
  • Corrosion or moisture damage
  • Scratched or peeling finish
  • Paint, plaster or debris obstructing the louvres
  • Movement away from the door, wall or duct face
  • Damage to the intumescent grille behind
  • Unauthorised alterations

Clean using:

  • A soft cloth
  • A soft brush
  • A suitable vacuum-cleaner attachment
  • A mildly damp cloth where appropriate

Avoid:

  • Abrasive pads
  • Steel wool
  • Strong solvents
  • Pressure washing
  • Excessive water
  • Painting over the louvres

Important Performance Note

The Pyrocover 100 is a decorative and protective cover rather than the active fire-protection component.

The fire performance of the installation depends on:

  • The approved door, wall or duct construction
  • The correct Pyrogrille 100
  • The aperture dimensions and location
  • The grille fixings
  • The perimeter intumescent sealant
  • The cover-plate arrangement
  • The quality of installation

Install the cover only as part of an approved tested or assessed system where fire performance is required.
