ISL Therm-A-Strip Glazing Seal – 2100mm

ISL Therm-A-Strip Glazing Seal – 2100mm is a flexible, self-adhesive intumescent strip suitable for use within approved fire-resistant glazing systems and other closely controlled fire-sealing applications.

The strip is manufactured from a phosphate-based intumescent material that remains flexible during normal conditions. When exposed to elevated temperatures, it expands to help fill gaps and restrict the passage of flames and hot gases through the protected area.

The stocked range is supplied in three profile sizes:

  • 10 × 2mm
  • 15 × 2mm
  • 20 × 2mm

Every option is supplied in a fixed 2100mm length with a White finish.

Flexible Intumescent Glazing Strip

Therm-A-Strip combines the fire-sealing properties of an intumescent product with the handling benefits of a flexible strip.

Within a supported glazing arrangement, it can be positioned between specified glazing components to help protect gaps around the fire-resistant glass.

The flexible construction allows the strip to:

  • Follow straight glazing beads and aperture edges
  • Be cut accurately to the required length
  • Fit within relatively narrow glazing pockets
  • Form closely fitted joints around an aperture
  • Accommodate limited normal manufacturing tolerances

The strip must be installed in the location and orientation required by the fire-door, glazing-system or assessment evidence.

Low-Pressure Intumescent Performance

Therm-A-Strip is described as a low-pressure intumescent material.

This makes it suitable for applications where a more forceful pressure-forming product could be unsuitable. The moderate expansion pressure helps the material fill available spaces while providing resistance to erosion during fire conditions.

When heated, the material:

  • Activates at approximately 180°C
  • Expands to around ten times its original volume
  • Generates fire-retardant gases
  • Develops an intumescent barrier within the available gap

The available expansion space and installed strip dimensions must follow the supported construction.

Applications in Glazed Apertures

The supplied product is sold as a glazing seal and may be used within approved glazed apertures in suitable fire-resisting doors and screens.

A complete fire-glazing system may also require:

  • Approved fire-resistant glass
  • Specified timber or metal glazing beads
  • Mechanical bead fixings
  • Glazing setting blocks
  • Aperture liners
  • Specified glass edge cover
  • Controlled clearances around the glass

Therm-A-Strip must not be treated as a complete glazing system by itself.

Fire-Door Applications

Before using Therm-A-Strip within a fire-resisting door, confirm that the supporting doorset evidence permits:

  • A glazed aperture
  • The selected fire-resistant glass
  • The proposed aperture dimensions and location
  • The selected Therm-A-Strip width
  • The proposed strip position
  • The glazing-bead material and dimensions
  • The bead fixing type and centres
  • Any required aperture lining

Cutting a glazed aperture into a certified fire door without suitable evidence may invalidate the certification and fire-performance claim.

Fire Performance

The manufacturer states that Therm-A-Strip has been successfully tested as a component within doorsets to the fire-resistance requirements of:

  • BS 476: Part 20
  • BS 476: Part 22

This testing does not give every Therm-A-Strip profile a universal standalone fire rating.

The achieved performance depends on the complete assembly, including:

  • The door or screen construction
  • The protected opening
  • The glass and glazing beads
  • The strip dimensions and position
  • The mechanical fixings
  • The installation quality

Self-Adhesive Installation

The stocked Therm-A-Strip profiles are supplied in a self-adhesive format to simplify positioning during assembly.

The adhesive backing helps hold the strip against a suitable glazing bead or other approved surface while the remaining glazing components are installed.

The adhesive does not:

  • Structurally retain the glass
  • Replace glazing beads
  • Replace screws, pins or other mechanical fixings
  • Correct an oversized glazing pocket
  • Create a fire-rated assembly without supporting evidence

Natural White Finish

The stocked range is supplied in White.

The manufacturer describes the standard material as having a natural white finish that is resistant to atmospheric moisture and carbon dioxide. It therefore does not normally require additional surface protection.

The material may be compatible with conventional decorative finishes, but any painting or coating within a certified glazing system should first be checked against the applicable evidence.

Available Widths

The current stocked profiles are:

  • 10 × 2mm: the narrowest stocked option for supported compact glazing details.
  • 15 × 2mm: an intermediate-width strip.
  • 20 × 2mm: the widest stocked option.

The three widths are not automatically interchangeable.

Select the profile specified by the glazing-system detail rather than choosing solely according to the available space.

2100mm Strip Length

Each product is supplied as one 2100mm strip.

The quantity required depends on:

  • The number of glazed apertures
  • The width and height of each aperture
  • Whether the strip is required on one or both faces
  • The bead-joint arrangement
  • Cutting waste

Measure the full glazing perimeter before calculating the required number of lengths.

Other Fire-Sealing Applications

Therm-A-Strip can also be produced for applications where a flexible, low-pressure intumescent gasket is required.

How to Install ISL Therm-A-Strip Glazing Seal – 2100mm

Therm-A-Strip must be installed in accordance with the tested or assessed glazing-system detail.

The manufacturer does not prescribe one universal glazing position, bead construction or fixing arrangement for every application. Confirm the complete specification before cutting or applying the strip.

What You’ll Need

  • Therm-A-Strip in the specified 10 × 2mm, 15 × 2mm or 20 × 2mm size
  • The approved fire-resistant glass
  • The specified glazing beads
  • The required mechanical bead fixings
  • Approved setting blocks where required
  • The applicable doorset or glazing-system evidence

  • Pencil
  • Straight edge
  • Sharp scissors or a suitable knife
  • Clean lint-free cloth

Before You Start

Confirm:

  • The required strip width

Step 1: Inspect the Glazed Aperture

Check that the prepared opening is:

  • Correctly sized
  • Square
  • Located in the permitted area
  • Free from loose or damaged material
  • Compatible with the approved glazing construction

Stop work if the exposed construction does not match the expected doorset or screen specification.

Step 2: Prepare the Glazing Components

Prepare the glazing beads, aperture liners and setting blocks according to the supporting evidence.

Confirm that the selected Therm-A-Strip width corresponds with the approved glazing detail.

Do not:

  • Substitute one width for another
  • Install two narrow strips in place of one wider strip
  • Double the 2mm material to create an unsupported thickness
  • Omit another specified glazing component

Step 3: Clean the Bonding Surface

The surface receiving the self-adhesive strip must be:

  • Clean
  • Dry
  • Stable
  • Free from timber or metal dust
  • Free from grease and oil
  • Free from loose paint or coatings
  • Free from silicone and old adhesive

Allow any suitable cleaning product to dry completely.

Step 4: Confirm the Strip Position

Establish whether the approved system requires the strip to be applied to:

  • The glazing bead
  • The aperture edge
  • An aperture liner
  • Another specified glazing-system component

Do not assume that the same position applies to every fire-door or screen system.

Step 5: Measure the First Section

Measure the first bead or aperture side.

Transfer the measurement to the Therm-A-Strip without stretching it.

The cut length should meet the adjoining section closely at the corner.

Step 6: Cut the Strip

Cut the material cleanly using sharp scissors or a suitable knife.

The cut should be:

  • Straight
  • Square where required
  • Free from tearing
  • Free from crushed edges

Do not pull or stretch the material while cutting.

Step 7: Apply the First Section

Peel back a short part of the adhesive release liner.

Align the strip with the required installation position and press it firmly against the prepared surface.

Remove the liner progressively while working along the strip.

Do not:

  • Stretch the material
  • Twist the profile
  • Apply it over dust or moisture
  • Repeatedly remove and reposition the same section
  • Leave loose or unsupported areas

Step 8: Continue Around the Aperture

Measure, cut and apply each remaining strip section.

At the corners:

  • Fit adjoining ends closely together.
  • Avoid open gaps.
  • Avoid bulky overlaps unless required by the evidence.
  • Maintain the specified strip position.

Step 9: Inspect the Intumescent Seal

Before installing the glass, check for:

  • Missing sections
  • Open joints
  • Loose adhesive areas
  • Torn or crushed material
  • Incorrectly positioned strips
  • Contamination

Replace defective sections before continuing.

Step 10: Install the Setting Blocks

Fit the specified setting blocks in the positions required by the glazing-system evidence.

The setting blocks support the glass and maintain the required edge clearances.

Therm-A-Strip must not be used to support the weight of the glass.

Step 11: Position the Glass

Install the approved fire-resistant glass using suitable handling equipment.

Check that:

  • The glass rests correctly on the setting blocks.
  • The required edge clearances are maintained.
  • The Therm-A-Strip remains in position.
  • The glass does not tear or displace the strip.
  • The specified glass edge cover can be achieved.

Step 12: Install the Glazing Beads

Position and mechanically secure the glazing beads according to the approved glazing detail.

Confirm that:

  • The beads remain straight.
  • The specified fixings and centres are used.
  • The glass is not subjected to excessive local pressure.
  • The strip remains continuous around the aperture.
  • The bead joints meet closely.

The self-adhesive backing does not replace the required mechanical bead fixings.

Step 13: Complete the Final Inspection

Inspect both faces of the completed glazed aperture.

Confirm that:

  • The correct Therm-A-Strip profile has been installed.
  • The correct glass and glazing beads have been used.
  • Every required fixing is present.
  • The glass remains correctly supported.
  • No intumescent section is missing or displaced.
  • The completed arrangement matches the supporting evidence.

Installation Tips

  • Check the complete fire-glazing specification before starting.
  • Use only the specified Therm-A-Strip width.
  • Apply the strip to a clean and dry surface.
  • Remove the release liner progressively.
  • Do not stretch or twist the material.
  • Keep all joints closely fitted.
  • Use approved setting blocks to support the glass.
  • Use the specified glazing beads and mechanical fixings.
  • Do not rely on the adhesive to retain the glass.
  • Do not substitute glazing components without evidence.

Inspection and Maintenance

Inspect the glazed aperture as part of the doorset or screen maintenance programme.

Check for:

  • Cracked or damaged glass
  • Loose glazing beads
  • Missing or corroded fixings
  • Displaced intumescent material
  • Open glazing joints
  • Movement within the glazing pocket
  • Unauthorised changes to the aperture

If you are not home when delivery is attempted, the courier will usually leave a card or contact you with the next steps.

Depending on the courier and service used, they may attempt re-delivery, leave the parcel in a safe place, or take it back to the depot.

For pallet deliveries, someone normally needs to be available to accept the goods, as these are delivered kerbside and cannot usually be left unattended.

If you need to make a change to your order, please contact us as soon as possible after placing it.

We can usually make changes before the order has been processed or dispatched, but once it has entered production, packing, or shipping, changes may no longer be possible.

Our team will let you know what can be amended and whether any additional charges apply.

If an item is currently out of stock, please contact us to check availability.

Some products can still be ordered on a lead time basis, while others may be temporarily unavailable from the supplier.

We will advise you on the expected timescale and whether a suitable alternative is available.

In some cases, parcel deliveries may be left with a neighbour if you have given delivery instructions and the courier allows it.

Pallet deliveries are less flexible, as they usually require the goods to be accepted in person at the delivery address.
