Interdens 1mm AV2/AV3 Multi-Point Lock Protection Kit

Interdens 1mm AV2/AV3 Multi-Point Lock Protection Kit is a pre-cut intumescent protection system designed for compatible AV2 and AV3 multipoint locks and their associated keeps in fire-resisting timber doorsets.

The kit provides intumescent material around the recessed lock and keep locations, helping protect areas where timber has been removed to accommodate the multipoint locking system.

Each product is supplied as one complete kit in a fixed specification:

  • Designed for compatible AV2 and AV3 multipoint locks and keeps
  • 1mm-thick Interdens material
  • White finish
  • Self-adhesive backing
  • Pre-cut kit configuration

Protection for Multipoint Lock Locations

A multipoint lock requires recesses and routing within the edge and face of the door leaf. Additional recesses may also be required in the frame for the associated keeps.

These machined areas can reduce the amount of timber surrounding the locking system and create vulnerable locations within a fire-resisting doorset.

The Interdens kit is intended to provide protection around the compatible lock and keep components where required by the doorset or hardware evidence.

During fire conditions, the intumescent material expands to help:

  • Protect the timber surrounding the lock recesses
  • Limit direct heat transfer from metal lock components
  • Reduce localised charring around the machined areas
  • Protect the interface between the lock system and door construction
  • Support the performance of the complete tested doorset

Universal AV2/AV3 Kit

Norseal describes the product as an AV2/3 universal kit for locks and keeps.

The term universal relates to the supported AV2 and AV3 lock family. It must not be interpreted as meaning that the kit is suitable for every multipoint lock from every manufacturer.

Before ordering, confirm:

  • The exact lock manufacturer and model
  • That the lock is an AV2 or AV3 configuration
  • The associated keep arrangement
  • The required intumescent material and thickness
  • That the kit is included within the lock or doorset evidence

Interdens Intumescent Material

The kit is manufactured from 1mm Interdens, a low-pressure intumescent material used to protect ironmongery within fire-resisting doorsets.

Interdens remains thin and discreet during normal use. When exposed to elevated temperatures, it expands into available spaces around the protected components.

Norseal describes Interdens as activating at approximately 180°C and expanding substantially under fire conditions.

The low-pressure expansion characteristic makes it suitable for closely fitted hardware locations where controlled intumescence is required around metal lock components and timber recesses.

Self-Adhesive Backing

The individual kit sections incorporate self-adhesive backing to assist positioning during installation.

The adhesive helps hold each section in its intended location while the lock, forend and keep components are refitted.

The adhesive is an installation aid only. It does not replace:

  • The lock fixing screws
  • The keep fixing screws
  • The mechanical retention of the multipoint lock
  • Any other fixing required by the lock manufacturer

Pre-Cut Kit Format

The kit is supplied with pre-cut intumescent sections for the compatible AV2/AV3 lock and keep arrangement.

Using a prepared kit helps:

  • Reduce on-site cutting
  • Provide repeatable component shapes
  • Simplify identification of the required protection areas
  • Reduce the likelihood of important sections being omitted
  • Support consistent installation across multiple doors

Identify and dry-position every section before removing the adhesive release liners.

Do not discard, trim, overlap or substitute pieces unless this is expressly permitted by the current fitting instructions or supporting doorset evidence.

Fire Performance

Norseal identifies its Interdens lock kits for lock and latch locations within fire-resisting doorsets, with fire resistance in accordance with BS 476-22.

The kit does not independently provide an FD30, FD60 or other fire-resistance classification.

Performance depends on the complete assembly, including:

  • The fire-door leaf and frame construction
  • The AV2 or AV3 lock specification
  • The keep configuration
  • The lock and keep recess dimensions
  • The position and completeness of the Interdens kit
  • The fixing screws
  • The door dimensions and weight
  • The installation quality

The exact kit arrangement used during testing or assessment must be reproduced on the installed doorset.

Replacement and Retrofit Work

Where an AV2 or AV3 lock is removed for maintenance or replacement, inspect the existing intumescent protection before refitting the hardware.

Replace the kit where the material is:

  • Missing
  • Torn or damaged
  • Contaminated
  • Permanently compressed
  • Incorrectly positioned
  • Incompatible with the replacement lock

Changing the multipoint lock without reinstating the required intumescent protection can affect the evidence for the complete fire door.

Not an Acoustic or Smoke Seal

This kit is designed to provide intumescent fire protection around compatible multipoint lock hardware.

It should not be assigned:

  • A standalone acoustic rating
  • A cold-smoke classification
  • An air-leakage rating
  • A security classification

Compatibility Requirements

The kit should only be selected where the supporting evidence permits:

  • A compatible AV2 or AV3 multipoint lock
  • The associated lock-keep configuration
  • Interdens intumescent material
  • A 1mm material thickness
  • The supplied pre-cut protection arrangement
  • The proposed installation within the door and frame

The phrase “universal kit” applies to the supported AV2/AV3 arrangement. It does not indicate compatibility with all multipoint locks.

Quantity Guidance

One ordered item contains one complete AV2/AV3 protection kit.

Normally, one complete kit is required for each compatible lock installation, subject to the applicable hardware and doorset specification.

Do not divide one kit between multiple doors or omit sections that appear unnecessary without supporting evidence.

Storage

  • Store the complete kit flat in clean, dry internal conditions.
  • Keep the adhesive release liners attached until installation.
  • Keep all sections together as one kit.
  • Protect the material from moisture, dust, grease and oils.
  • Do not fold, crease or permanently compress the sections.

Pre-Installation Inspection

Do not install a kit where any section is:

  • Missing
  • Torn, creased or delaminated
  • Wet or contaminated
  • Permanently compressed
  • Missing its adhesive release liner
  • Incorrectly shaped for the lock or keep

How to Install the Interdens 1mm AV2/AV3 Multi-Point Lock Protection Kit

The AV2/AV3 protection kit must be installed in accordance with the current lock-manufacturer instructions and the evidence for the complete fire-resisting doorset.

The exact number, shape and position of the supplied sections must be reproduced as specified. Do not rely on a generic multipoint-lock installation where project evidence requires another arrangement.

1. Verify the Lock and Doorset Specification

Before installation, confirm:

  • The multipoint lock is a compatible AV2 or AV3 model.
  • The associated keeps match the supported arrangement.
  • The door and frame are approved for the lock system.
  • The evidence specifies 1mm Interdens protection.
  • The required lock and keep recess dimensions are known.
  • The complete kit and all lock fixings are available.

Do not replace the specified kit with loose intumescent sheet or a differently shaped lock kit without supporting evidence.

2. Inspect the Kit

Lay out all supplied sections on a clean surface.

Check that:

  • No pieces are missing.
  • The material is clean and dry.
  • The sections are not torn or creased.
  • The adhesive liners remain intact.
  • The kit corresponds with the intended AV2/AV3 lock arrangement.

3. Prepare the Door and Frame Recesses

Machine the door and frame only in accordance with the lock and doorset instructions.

The recesses should be:

  • Correctly sized for the lock and keeps
  • Flat and free from raised timber fibres
  • Free from loose core material
  • Structurally sound around the screw positions
  • Free from excessive clearance around the hardware

Do not enlarge or deepen the recesses beyond the permitted dimensions.

4. Clean the Receiving Surfaces

Remove all machining dust and loose material with a suitable brush or vacuum.

The surfaces receiving the adhesive-backed Interdens must be clean and dry.

Do not install the material over:

  • Grease or oil
  • Wet timber
  • Loose paint
  • Splinters or raised fibres
  • Old adhesive that prevents flat contact

5. Identify Each Kit Section

Dry-position the supplied sections against their corresponding lock and keep locations before removing any release liner.

Confirm that each section:

  • Matches the intended hardware component
  • Sits within the correct recess
  • Lies flat without folding
  • Does not obstruct moving lock parts
  • Does not project beyond the required hardware position

Do not assume that visually similar pieces are interchangeable.

6. Apply the Lock-Side Protection

Remove the release liner from the relevant lock-side section without touching or contaminating the adhesive.

Align the material within the specified recess and press it firmly into position.

Ensure that:

  • The material remains flat.
  • The complete required area is protected.
  • No crease or overlap is created.
  • The section does not obstruct the lock mechanism.
  • The fixing positions remain usable.

Repeat the process for the remaining lock-side sections in the arrangement required by the current fitting instructions.

7. Install the Multi-Point Lock

Position the AV2 or AV3 multipoint lock over the installed protection.

Insert the lock carefully so that the Interdens sections are not:

  • Scraped from the recess
  • Folded beneath the lock
  • Torn by sharp metal edges
  • Displaced from their intended locations

Secure the lock using the fixings specified by the lock manufacturer and doorset evidence.

8. Apply the Keep-Side Protection

Identify the intumescent sections intended for the frame keeps.

Dry-fit each piece before removing its adhesive liner, then press it into the required keep recess.

Confirm that:

  • The correct section is used at each keep.
  • The material lies flat.
  • The keep can sit correctly within the recess.
  • The intumescent does not obstruct the latch, hook or bolt engagement.

9. Fit and Align the Keeps

Install the keeps using the specified screws and alignment procedure.

Operate the lock carefully and confirm that all locking points enter their keeps without:

  • Binding
  • Excessive force
  • Displacing the intumescent material
  • Preventing the door from closing fully

10. Test the Complete Door

Operate the door and multipoint lock several times.

Confirm that:

  • The door closes fully into the frame.
  • The latch engages correctly.
  • Every locking point operates smoothly.
  • The keeps remain secure.
  • The self-closing device remains effective.
  • The required door gaps have not been altered.
  • No intumescent material is visible or displaced.

Final Inspection

Verify that:

  • The correct AV2/AV3 kit has been installed.
  • Every supplied section required by the fitting detail is present.
  • The 1mm Interdens material lies flat behind the hardware.
  • The lock and keeps are mechanically secure.
  • All locking points operate correctly.
  • The completed arrangement matches the doorset evidence.

Maintenance

Inspect the multipoint lock as part of the routine fire-door inspection programme.

Check for:

  • Loose lock or keep fixings
  • Difficulty operating any locking point
  • Movement of the lock or keeps
  • Damage to the surrounding door or frame
  • Incorrect replacement hardware
  • Missing or disturbed intumescent protection

Whenever the lock or keeps are removed or replaced, inspect and reinstate the complete specified intumescent kit.

Important Performance Note

The Interdens AV2/AV3 kit does not independently provide a fire-resistance period.

Performance depends on the complete approved doorset, compatible multipoint lock, keep arrangement, Interdens kit, mechanical fixings and installation quality.
