3.5 × 32mm Fine Thread Drywall Screws are black-phosphate carbon-steel fixings designed for securing plasterboard and drywall boards to light-gauge steel framing or suitable timber studs.

The combination of a sharp piercing point, fine twin thread and fully threaded shank allows each screw to enter common drywall substrates quickly, normally without pre-drilling. A bugle-shaped head pulls the plasterboard firmly against the supporting framework while creating a shallow recess for jointing compound.

Each screw has a fixed specification:

Fine Twin Thread

The fully threaded shank incorporates a fine twin thread with an approximately 60-degree thread form.

The fine thread is particularly suited to light-gauge metal framing because it provides a greater number of thread engagements within the thin steel section. The twin-thread arrangement also assists rapid insertion when the screw is driven at the correct speed.

Although the screw may also be used in suitable timber studs, compatibility should be checked against the board manufacturer’s installation guidance. Coarse-thread drywall screws may be specified instead for some timber-framed applications.

Sharp Piercing Point

The sharp point is designed to pierce the plasterboard facing and enter light steel or timber framing without a separate pilot hole under normal installation conditions.

This helps:

  • Speed up repetitive board fixing
  • Reduce the number of installation stages
  • Position the screw accurately before driving
  • Limit movement of the board during initial engagement

Pre-drilling may still be required where specified by the framing manufacturer or where the supporting material exceeds the screw’s intended capacity.

Bugle Head Without Nibs

The bugle-shaped head is designed to draw gradually into the plasterboard surface rather than cutting abruptly through the paper facing.

When driven to the correct depth, the head creates a shallow recess suitable for covering with jointing compound while leaving the surrounding paper substantially intact.

The head should finish just beneath the board surface. It must not be driven so deeply that it tears through the face paper or crushes the gypsum core.

The absence of cutting nibs helps provide controlled countersinking within paper-faced plasterboard. It also reduces the risk of the head aggressively removing material around the fixing point.

Phillips Drive

The Phillips recess is compatible with a correctly sized Phillips driver bit.

Using a well-fitting bit helps:

  • Transfer torque consistently
  • Maintain control as the head approaches the board surface
  • Reduce slipping and damage to the screw recess
  • Support repetitive installation using a drywall screw gun

Worn, undersized or incompatible driver bits should be replaced to prevent cam-out and poorly seated screw heads.

Black-Phosphate Carbon Steel

The screws are manufactured from carbon steel with a black-phosphate finish and low-friction coating.

The coating assists smooth driving and provides a limited level of protection during storage and use in normal dry internal conditions.

Black phosphate is not equivalent to a heavy-duty galvanised, stainless-steel or exterior-grade corrosion-resistant finish.

Do not use these screws where they will be:

  • Directly exposed to external weather
  • Subject to persistent condensation
  • Installed in continuously wet areas
  • Exposed to aggressive chemicals or salt-laden air
  • Used in a system requiring stainless-steel or specialist coated fixings

Where an external-grade plasterboard or sheathing system is being installed, use only the fixing type specified by that system manufacturer.

Fully Threaded Design

The thread extends along the working length of the screw to provide consistent engagement with the supporting stud.

The screw should be driven until the bugle head is correctly seated. It should not be repeatedly removed and reinserted into the same damaged hole, as this can reduce holding performance.

Not a Structural Fixing

These are drywall-board fixings and should not be treated as general structural screws.

They are not intended to:

  • Join structural timber members
  • Support heavy fixtures or fittings
  • Replace anchors for wall-mounted equipment
  • Secure primary steelwork
  • Carry suspended structural loads

Heavy fittings should be fixed independently into suitable framing, noggins or rated anchors.

Acoustic and Fire-Rated Systems

The screw does not have an independent acoustic or fire-resistance rating.

Where it is used within an acoustic or fire-resisting partition, performance belongs to the complete tested or assessed construction, including:

  • The board type and thickness
  • The number of board layers
  • The framing system
  • The insulation
  • The screw type, length and spacing
  • The treatment of board joints and perimeter gaps
  • The quality of installation

How to Install 3.5 × 32mm Fine Thread Drywall Screws

Install the screws in accordance with the plasterboard and framing manufacturer’s instructions. The required fixing centres, edge distances and penetration depend on the complete wall or ceiling system.

1. Confirm the Screw Is Suitable

Before installation, verify:

  • The board type is suitable for drywall screws.
  • The supporting frame is compatible light steel or timber.
  • The 32mm length provides the required stud penetration.
  • The fine-thread specification is permitted for the substrate.
  • The system does not require a specialist fire-rated, acoustic or corrosion-resistant fixing.
  • The correct screw spacing is known.

2. Inspect the Framing

Check that the supporting studs or battens are:

  • Secure and correctly aligned
  • Positioned to support all board edges where required
  • Free from movement or excessive distortion
  • Suitable for the screw’s piercing and thread capacity
  • Dry and free from significant corrosion

3. Position the Plasterboard

Place the board against the supporting framework and hold it flat without excessive force.

Ensure that:

  • Board edges align with the supporting studs.
  • The required perimeter and movement gaps are maintained.
  • Board joints follow the system layout.
  • The board is not bowed or damaged.
  • Services behind the board are clear of the screw positions.

4. Select the Correct Driver

Fit a correctly sized Phillips driver bit into a drywall screw gun or suitable variable-speed driver.

A drywall depth-stop attachment is recommended for repetitive installation because it helps seat each screw consistently without tearing the board paper.

Replace the driver bit if it is worn or slips repeatedly within the screw head.

5. Position the Screw

Hold the screw perpendicular to the board surface and aligned with the centre of the supporting stud.

Keep each fixing the minimum distance from board edges specified by the plasterboard manufacturer.

Do not install screws:

  • Into unsupported board edges
  • Too close to damaged corners
  • Where they could strike cables or pipes
  • Through an existing failed fixing hole

6. Drive the Screw

Drive the screw at a controlled speed so the piercing point enters the supporting stud and the fine thread engages cleanly.

Maintain steady alignment throughout the drive. Avoid excessive sideways pressure, which can enlarge the hole or cause the screw to enter at an angle.

7. Set the Correct Head Depth

Stop when the bugle head sits just beneath the plasterboard surface and forms a shallow recess for jointing compound.

The correct result should:

  • Hold the board firmly against the framing
  • Leave the paper facing substantially intact
  • Leave no protruding screw head
  • Provide a shallow depression for finishing

Do not overdrive the screw through the paper facing. Once the paper has torn around the complete head, the fixing may no longer provide the intended board restraint.

8. Replace Failed Fixings

Where a screw is overdriven, loose or incorrectly positioned:

  • Leave it in place only where permitted by the board manufacturer.
  • Install a replacement fixing into sound material nearby.
  • Maintain the required edge distance and screw spacing.
  • Do not reuse the damaged fixing hole.

9. Maintain the Required Fixing Centres

Continue installing screws at the spacing specified for the particular wall, ceiling or lining system.

Do not assume that wall and ceiling fixing centres are identical. Ceiling boards and fire-rated or acoustic systems may require closer centres or a specific installation sequence.

10. Multi-Layer Board Systems

Where more than one plasterboard layer is installed, verify that the selected screw length is suitable for the particular layer.

A 32mm screw may be appropriate for a first layer or certain single-board constructions but may not provide sufficient penetration through a thicker multi-layer build-up.

Use the screw length specified for each layer of the tested or designed system.

11. Final Inspection

Before jointing, check that:

  • All screws are correctly positioned over the framing.
  • No screw head projects above the board surface.
  • No fixing has torn completely through the paper.
  • The board is held firmly against the supporting studs.
  • The specified fixing centres have been maintained.
  • Board joints and perimeter gaps remain correctly formed.

12. Apply Jointing Compound

Cover correctly recessed screw heads using the jointing compound and finishing method specified for the plasterboard system.

Do not rely on jointing compound to correct a loose, protruding or overdriven fixing.

Important Environmental Note

Black-phosphate drywall screws are intended primarily for dry internal construction.

Do not use them in exposed external or persistently damp locations unless the screw supplier and complete wall or ceiling system expressly confirm suitability.

Important Performance Note

The screw does not independently provide acoustic, fire-resistance or structural performance.

The completed result depends on the board, framing, insulation, fixing centres, screw penetration, joint treatment, perimeter sealing and installation quality.

Depending on the courier and service used, they may attempt re-delivery, leave the parcel in a safe place, or take it back to the depot.

For pallet deliveries, someone normally needs to be available to accept the goods, as these are delivered kerbside and cannot usually be left unattended.
