Norsound NOR820 Retrofit Automatic Drop Seal – 44 × 13.5mm is a surface-mounted automatic door-bottom seal designed to improve acoustic and cold-smoke sealing without routing a groove into the door leaf.
The slim aluminium housing is screw-fixed to the face of an existing timber or metal door. A clip-on satin-silver cover plate conceals the fixings and provides a neat finished appearance.
As the door closes, a single mechanical actuator activates the internal mechanism and lowers the grey PVC gasket onto the finished floor, sill or threshold plate.
When the door opens, the gasket retracts into the aluminium housing, helping prevent it from dragging continuously across the floor.
What is the NOR820 used for?
The NOR820 is intended to close the otherwise open gap beneath an acoustic timber or metal doorset.

How does the NOR820 work?
The seal contains a mechanically operated drop mechanism.

When the door begins to open, the pressure on the actuator is released and the gasket retracts into the housing.

Single mechanical actuation

Acoustic performance

No routed mortise is required.

Before You Start

Step 1: Select the Installation Face
Decide whether the NOR820 will be fitted to the:
- Inside face — the side where the seal is positioned between the door stops when the door closes.
- Outside face — the opposite face, requiring a separate actuator contact-screw position.
The chosen position determines the required finished seal length.
Step 2A: Measure for an Inside-Face Installation
Measure the clear distance between the two door stops.
Record this dimension as X.
Calculate the required seal length using:
L = X − 7mm
For example:
- If the clear distance between the stops is 827mm, the required seal length is 820mm.
Record measurement L for cutting.
Step 2B: Measure for an Outside-Face Installation
Identify the final position of the actuator contact screw or plate.
Measure between that contact position and the hanging-side edge of the door.
Record this dimension as X.
Calculate the required seal length using:
L = X − 2mm
For example:
- If the measured distance is 822mm, the required seal length is 820mm.
Record measurement L for cutting.
Step 3: Confirm the Cut-Back Allowance
Compare the required finished length with the supplied product.
The permitted maximum cut-back is:
- 400mm seal — 130mm.
- 500mm to 1200mm seals — 125mm.
Check the individual product label before cutting.
Do not shorten the seal beyond the marked limit.
Step 4: Identify the Actuator End
Identify the end containing the actuator mechanism.
All measurements should be taken from the actuator end.
The excess material is removed from the opposite end.
Before cutting, reconfirm:
- The actuator end
- The non-actuator cutting end
- The calculated finished length
- The permitted cut-back
Do not cut through the actuator mechanism.
Step 5: Mark the Seal and Cover Plate
Measure dimension L from the actuator end.
Mark the finished length on both:
- The aluminium drop-seal body
- The aluminium clip-on cover plate
Both components must finish at the same length.
Check the marks before cutting.
Step 6: Remove the Cover Plate
Unclip or slide the aluminium cover plate away from the main seal body.
Set it aside carefully to protect the satin-silver finish.
Do not bend or twist the cover profile.
Step 7: Protect the PVC Gasket
Withdraw or move the flexible PVC gasket away from the cutting line.
Move enough gasket clear so that it cannot be damaged by the saw.
Do not:
- Stretch the gasket excessively
- Cut the gasket at the same time as the aluminium
- Damage the inner carrier
- Allow metal swarf to enter the mechanism
Step 8: Cut the Aluminium Components
Support the seal body and cover plate securely.
Cut both aluminium sections squarely at the marked position using a fine-tooth saw.
After cutting:
- File the cut edges smooth
- Remove all sharp burrs
- Remove all aluminium swarf
- Check that the cover plate still fits the body
- Confirm that the internal mechanism operates freely
Rough edges may cause the cover plate or gasket to catch during operation.
Step 9: Replace and Trim the Gasket
Return the PVC gasket to its normal position within the inner carrier.
Trim the excess gasket cleanly using a sharp knife.
Do not stretch the gasket while trimming, as it may retract and finish too short.
Confirm that it remains:
- Straight
- Continuous
- Free from tears
- Correctly retained in its carrier
Step 10: Establish the Mounting Height
Hold the seal against the selected door face near the bottom edge.
Position it so that:
- The gasket can cover the threshold gap when lowered
- The gasket remains clear of the floor while retracted
- The housing is straight and level
- The cover plate will not project below the door unnecessarily
- The seal will not interfere with the door stop or frame
Do not position the body so low that the gasket drags while the door is open.
Step 11: Mark the Fixing Positions
With the seal held level in its final position, mark the screw-fixing holes onto the door face.
Check that each fixing enters suitable door material.
For metal doors, use fixing methods appropriate to the door construction.
Do not place screws where they could damage:
- Glazing
- Internal reinforcement
- Locks or flush bolts
- Electrical components
- Other door hardware
Step 12: Drill the Pilot Holes
Remove the seal and drill suitable pilot holes at the marked positions.
Select the drill size according to:
- The supplied screws
- The door material
- The door manufacturer’s requirements
Remove all drilling debris before fixing the seal.
Step 13: Screw-Fix the Seal Body
Return the NOR820 to its marked position and secure it using the supplied screws.
Tighten the screws evenly.
Do not overtighten them, as this can:
- Distort the aluminium housing
- Restrict the drop mechanism
- Damage the door face
- Pull the seal out of alignment
Check that the body remains level.
Step 14: Install the Actuator Contact Assembly
Fit the supplied actuator plate, contact screw or corresponding frame component in the position shown by the manufacturer’s guide.
The contact component must align with the seal actuator as the door closes.
For an outside-face installation, its position forms part of the original measurement used to calculate the finished seal length.
Check that:
- The actuator makes positive contact
- The door can still close fully
- The contact does not obstruct the door swing
- The component is securely fixed
Step 15: Fit the Actuator and Distance Pieces
Fit the actuator stick and any required distance pieces in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
The distance pieces allow the actuator contact position to be adjusted for the door and frame arrangement.
Make sure the actuator is securely clipped into position before testing the door.
Step 16: Fit the Cover Plate
Clip the satin-silver aluminium cover plate over the fixed seal body.
Check that:
- The cover plate is fully engaged
- The screw fixings are concealed
- The cut ends align correctly
- The plate does not catch the moving gasket
- No sharp edges remain exposed
Step 17: Test the Initial Operation
Close the door slowly while observing the gasket.
The NOR820 should:
- Remain retracted while the door is open
- Begin lowering when the actuator contacts the frame component
- Reach the floor or threshold as the door closes
- Make contact across the width of the door
- Retract when the door opens
Step 18: Adjust the Actuator
Adjust the clip-in actuator progressively by hand.
Open and close the door after each small adjustment.
Continue until the gasket makes light and continuous threshold contact when the door is fully closed.
Do not over-adjust the actuator.
Step 19: Check Gasket Contact
Close the door and inspect the gasket across the complete opening.
Confirm that:
- The actuator end contacts the threshold
- The opposite end contacts the threshold
- The centre contacts the threshold
- No visible open gaps remain
- The gasket is not folded sideways
- The door still closes and latches correctly
Where the floor is too uneven or compressible, install a suitable threshold plate rather than forcing excessive drop from the mechanism.
Step 20: Complete the Final Door Check
Operate the door several times.
Confirm that:
- The door opens freely
- The gasket retracts fully
- The seal does not drag continuously across the floor
- The door closes completely
- The latch engages correctly
- The gasket provides continuous contact

- The cover plate remains clipped in position

- Check the product-label cut-back limit.
- Cut the seal body and cover plate to the same length.
- Protect the PVC gasket while cutting.
- File all aluminium edges smooth.
- Remove all metal swarf from the mechanism.
- Mount the body straight and level.
- Use all required screw fixings.
- Align the actuator and frame contact carefully.
- Adjust the actuator progressively.
- Do not over-compress the PVC gasket.
- Check that the door continues to close and latch correctly.
Maintenance Advice
Inspect and operate the NOR820 regularly as part of the door-maintenance programme.
Check for:
- Loose fixing screws
- Movement of the seal body
- A loose or damaged cover plate
- Damage to the PVC gasket
- Damage or misalignment at the actuator
- Debris beneath the gasket
- Failure of the gasket to retract
- Loss of contact with the threshold
- Excessive gasket compression
- Changes in door alignment
- Failure of the door to close or latch
Clean the gasket and threshold using a soft cloth and a suitable mild cleaning product.
Do not apply unapproved oil, grease or lubricant to the internal mechanism.
Important Performance Note
Correct measuring, cutting, positioning, fixing and actuator adjustment are essential to the operation of the NOR820.
The product does not independently create an acoustically rated, smoke-control or fire-resisting door.
Final performance depends on:
- The construction of the door leaf
- The door frame
- The perimeter sealing system
- The threshold surface
- The adjustment of the PVC gasket
- The ironmongery and glazing
- The surrounding wall construction
- The quality of installation and maintenance
For fire-resisting or certified doorsets, install the NOR820 only in accordance with the applicable test evidence, assessment and door-manufacturer instructions.
