Pyroplex Rigid Box Single Centre Flipper Fire, Smoke & Acoustic Seal is a combined intumescent fire-door seal with one centrally positioned flexible flipper, designed to provide fire, cold-smoke and acoustic sealing around suitable timber doorsets.

The seal combines an intumescent core, a rigid box section and an integral flexible flipper positioned along the centre of the profile.

During normal use, the centre flipper contacts the opposing door or frame surface to help restrict smoke, sound, draughts and visible light through the perimeter gap.

When exposed to elevated temperatures during a fire, the intumescent material expands to help close the gap between the door leaf and frame, supporting the performance of the complete tested fire-resisting doorset.

Each seal is supplied in a fixed 2100mm length and is available in:

  • 10 × 4mm
  • 15 × 4mm
  • 20 × 4mm

What is a single centre flipper seal?

A single centre flipper seal incorporates one flexible polymer flipper positioned centrally along the rigid intumescent profile.

When the door closes, the flipper deflects against the opposing surface and helps close the normal operating gap between the door leaf and frame.

The product performs three complementary functions:

  • Fire sealing — the intumescent material expands when exposed to elevated temperatures.
  • Smoke sealing — the centre flipper helps restrict cold smoke during normal temperatures.
  • Acoustic sealing — the flexible contact helps reduce the open air path through which sound can pass.

The flipper is thermally fused to the rigid box section to help prevent it from separating during normal use.

How does the intumescent seal work?

During everyday conditions, the intumescent section remains inactive within the routed rebate in the door leaf or frame.

When exposed to the heat generated by a fire, the active material expands and helps fill the gap between the door leaf and frame.

This action supports the complete fire-resisting doorset by helping restrict:

These designations apply to complete tested or assessed doorset constructions.

An individual strip does not independently provide 30 or 60 minutes of fire resistance. Installing a particular profile will not convert an ordinary door into a certified fire door.

Why is the correct profile size important?

The intumescent seal must reproduce the configuration covered by the door manufacturer’s test evidence, assessment or certification.

The required profile can depend on:

The individual strip does not have a universal standalone decibel rating.

Final acoustic performance depends on the complete door assembly, including:

Single centre flipper or offset flipper?

The Single Centre Flipper has one flexible flipper positioned centrally along the rigid profile.

The Offset Flipper, also known as the Side Flipper, positions the flipper towards one side of the casing.

The offset version may be specified where the side-positioned flipper is required to maintain continuity through particular hinge or ironmongery details.

The profiles are not automatically interchangeable. Use the exact configuration specified within the relevant doorset evidence.

Single centre flipper or double flipper?

The Single Centre Flipper uses one flexible contact element positioned in the centre of the rigid casing.

The Double Flipper, referred to by Pyroplex as the Twin Flipper, contains two flexible flippers.

The number and position of flippers form part of the tested seal arrangement. Do not replace one configuration with another solely because the profile dimensions are the same.

The profile size, quantity, position and treatment around ironmongery must match the test evidence, assessment or certification for the complete fire-resisting doorset.

Step 1: Inspect the Doorset

Inspect the door leaf, frame and ironmongery before installation.

Step 2: Identify the Required Seal Position

Check that:

Where two seal lines are specified, mark both positions accurately and maintain the required spacing.

Step 3: Measure Each Required Section

Double doors may also require seals at the meeting stiles.

Do not assume that both jambs or leaves are identical in length.

After cutting:

Step 6: Select the Correct Router Cutter

Use a router cutter matching the nominal width of the selected rigid-box profile:

  • 20mm cutter for the 20 × 4mm seal

Set the groove depth to accommodate the nominal 4mm rigid box section and to match the doorset specification.

The projecting centre flipper must not be included when setting the groove depth.

Test the router setting on a suitable timber offcut where practical.

Step 7: Route the Groove

Route a straight and continuous groove in the specified position.

Use a router guide or fence to maintain consistent alignment.

Machine the rebate carefully to avoid:

  • Creating an oversized groove
  • Routing too deeply
  • Splitting the timber
  • Damaging the door edge or frame
  • Cutting into structural door components
  • Producing an uneven groove

The rebate should hold the rigid profile securely without crushing or distorting it.

Step 8: Follow the Approved Ironmongery Detail

The treatment around hinges, locks, latches and other hardware must follow the doorset evidence.

Pyroplex states that the intumescent section may be interrupted for essential ironmongery while retaining the integral flipper.

This does not permit unrestricted cutting.

The approved detail may require:

  • A controlled local interruption in the intumescent section
  • The centre flipper to remain continuous
  • The flipper to pass across or beside the ironmongery position
  • Intumescent hinge pads

Do not remove the flipper or cut away large sections merely to clear ironmongery.

  • Bring the ends together neatly
  • Avoid large open gaps
  • Do not overlap the rigid profiles
  • Maintain the required flipper continuity
  • Keep the flipper free from adhesive contamination

Step 15: Check Centre-Flipper Contact

Close the door and inspect the flipper contact around the required perimeter.

Check the:

  • Door head
  • Hinge-side jamb
  • Closing-side jamb
  • Meeting stiles on double doors

The flipper should make appropriate contact with the opposing surface without preventing the door from closing.

Check for:

  • Visible open gaps
  • A flipper folded in the wrong direction
  • Excessive compression
  • Twisted or trapped sections
  • Loss of continuity around ironmongery
  • Damage around hinges, locks and latches

Step 16: Check Door Operation

Open and close the door several times.

Confirm that:

  • The door opens freely
  • The door closes completely
  • The latch engages correctly
  • The self-closing device closes the door where required
  • The seals remain firmly seated
  • The centre flipper makes consistent contact
  • No section projects from the routed groove
  • The perimeter gaps remain within specification
  • The flipper does not create excessive operating resistance

A warped or incorrectly hung door should be repaired rather than relying on the flipper to compensate for excessive gap variation.

Step 17: Check the Threshold Gap

The Single Centre Flipper normally treats the head, jambs and any specified meeting stiles.

Where smoke or acoustic containment is required, inspect the gap beneath the door and install the approved:

  • Automatic drop seal
  • Door-bottom seal
  • Threshold plate
  • Alternative tested threshold arrangement

The selected threshold system must be compatible with the complete doorset evidence.

Installation Tips

  • Check the complete doorset specification before selecting a profile.
  • Do not choose the seal using the fire rating alone.
  • Remember that centre flipper describes the profile, not necessarily the seal’s position within the door edge.
  • Use the installation position stated by the supporting evidence.
  • Make sure the flipper faces the opposing sealing surface.
  • Use a router cutter matching the rigid-box width.
  • Maintain a consistent groove depth.
  • Do not include the projecting flipper when setting the groove depth.
  • Maintain integral flipper continuity around ironmongery where specified.
  • Remove all routing dust before installation.
  • Install only between +5°C and +40°C.
  • Dry fit each section before removing the release liner.
  • Do not stretch, crush or twist the profile.
  • Do not trap the flipper inside the routed groove.
  • Keep joints neat and closely fitted.
  • Do not paint or stain the flexible flipper.
  • Check that the door continues to close and latch correctly.
  • Treat the threshold gap where smoke or acoustic sealing is required.

Maintenance Advice

Inspect the seals regularly as part of the fire-door inspection and maintenance programme.

Check for:

  • Missing seal sections
  • Loose or raised profiles
  • Cracked or damaged casing
  • A missing, cut or torn flipper
  • The flipper separating from the casing
  • Paint or stain covering the flipper
  • Contamination preventing correct contact
  • Open joints between lengths
  • Loss of continuity around ironmongery
  • Damage around hinges, locks and latches
  • Changes in the door-to-frame gaps
  • Failure of the door to close or latch

Replace damaged components using the exact specified product, size and flipper configuration.

Do not substitute an offset, double or triple-flipper profile without confirming that it is permitted by the doorset evidence.

Cleaning Advice

Clean the rigid profile and flexible flipper using a soft cloth and a suitable mild cleaning product.

Avoid:

  • Abrasive pads
  • Sharp tools
  • Strong solvents
  • High-solvent coatings
  • Paint or varnish over the flipper

Aggressive products can soften or embrittle the flipper material and reduce its smoke and acoustic sealing performance.

Storage Advice

Before installation, store the seals:

  • Flat and fully supported
  • In a clean, dry and ventilated location
  • Away from moisture and direct heat
  • With the adhesive release liner intact
  • With the centre flipper protected from crushing
  • Protected from bending, twisting and impact damage

Important Performance Note

The Pyroplex Rigid Box Single Centre Flipper Fire, Smoke & Acoustic Seal is one component within a complete fire-resisting doorset.

It does not independently create a 30-minute fire door, a 60-minute fire door, a smoke-control door or an acoustically rated door.

Final performance depends on:

  • The tested door-leaf construction
  • The door frame
  • The specified seal size, quantity and position
  • The perimeter gaps
  • The continuity and condition of the centre flipper
  • The approved treatment around hinges and other ironmongery
  • The threshold-sealing arrangement
  • The frame-to-wall installation
  • The quality of installation and maintenance

Always install the seal in accordance with the current doorset evidence, Pyroplex technical guidance and project fire-door specification.

Our standard pallet service offers delivery to the kerbside. Couriers will not be able to move pallets or goods inside the property.

For parcel deliveries, we will use a courier service.

Each item will be carefully packaged and distributed to our courier after being dispatched from our warehouse.

You can collect your order from our store. At checkout select "Local Pickup". We will notify you when your order is ready for collection.

Delivery & Returns FAQs

If you are not home when delivery is attempted, the courier will usually leave a card or contact you with the next steps.

Depending on the courier and service used, they may attempt re-delivery, leave the parcel in a safe place, or take it back to the depot.

For pallet deliveries, someone normally needs to be available to accept the goods, as these are delivered kerbside and cannot usually be left unattended.

If you need to make a change to your order, please contact us as soon as possible after placing it.

We can usually make changes before the order has been processed or dispatched, but once it has entered production, packing, or shipping, changes may no longer be possible.

Our team will let you know what can be amended and whether any additional charges apply.

If an item is currently out of stock, please contact us to check availability.

Some products can still be ordered on a lead time basis, while others may be temporarily unavailable from the supplier.

We will advise you on the expected timescale and whether a suitable alternative is available.

In some cases, parcel deliveries may be left with a neighbour if you have given delivery instructions and the courier allows it.

Pallet deliveries are less flexible, as they usually require the goods to be accepted in person at the delivery address.

If you would like delivery left with a neighbour where possible, please let us know in advance and we will note this on the order.
