Norsound NOR820 Retrofit Automatic Drop Seal – 44 × 13.5mm

Norsound NOR820 Retrofit Automatic Drop Seal – 44 × 13.5mm is a surface-mounted automatic door-bottom seal designed to improve acoustic and cold-smoke sealing without routing a groove into the door leaf.

The slim aluminium housing is screw-fixed to the face of an existing timber or metal door. A clip-on satin-silver cover plate conceals the fixings and provides a neat finished appearance.

As the door closes, a single mechanical actuator activates the internal mechanism and lowers the grey PVC gasket onto the finished floor, sill or threshold plate.

When the door opens, the gasket retracts into the aluminium housing, helping prevent it from dragging continuously across the floor.

What is the NOR820 used for?

The NOR820 is intended to close the otherwise open gap beneath an acoustic timber or metal doorset.

It can help:

  • Reduce airborne sound leakage beneath a closed door
  • Restrict cold-smoke movement through the threshold gap
  • Reduce draughts and uncontrolled airflow
  • Limit visible light beneath the door
  • Improve comfort and privacy between adjoining rooms
  • Improve an existing door without mortising its bottom edge
  • Complete a sealing arrangement incorporating suitable perimeter seals

The NOR820 treats only the bottom of the door. Suitable seals are normally also required around the door head and jambs.

Designed for retrofit installation

The NOR820 is surface-mounted rather than rebated into the door.

This means that installation does not normally require:

  • Routing a deep groove into the bottom rail
  • Removing material from the door core
  • Removing the door from the frame for machining
  • Specialist mortising equipment

This makes the NOR820 particularly useful for:

  • Existing doors
  • Pre-finished doors
  • Metal doors that cannot easily be rebated
  • Doors where the internal construction is unknown
  • On-site remedial work
  • Acoustic refurbishment projects
  • Suitable fire doors where core material must not be removed

How does the NOR820 work?

The seal contains a mechanically operated drop mechanism.

When the door closes, the actuator contacts its corresponding frame-mounted contact point and activates the seal.

The grey PVC gasket lowers until it contacts the finished floor or threshold.

When the door begins to open, the pressure on the actuator is released and the gasket retracts into the housing.

The NOR820 requires:

  • No electrical power supply
  • No wiring
  • No external control system
  • No floor-mounted operating mechanism

Single mechanical actuation

The NOR820 uses one actuator to operate the drop mechanism.

Norseal describes the actuator as a clip-in component that can be adjusted by hand, allowing the amount of gasket travel to be set after installation.

The drop should be adjusted so that the gasket makes light and continuous contact with the threshold when the door closes.

Excessive adjustment can:

  • Increase the force required to close the door
  • Prevent the latch from engaging correctly
  • Distort the PVC gasket
  • Increase wear on the mechanism
  • Cause unnecessary friction against the threshold

Self-levelling operation

The internal mechanism is designed to lower the gasket across the width of the door and accommodate limited variation in the threshold level.

This can help maintain contact where the floor is slightly sloped from one side of the opening to the other.

The seal cannot compensate for:

  • Deep dips through the centre of the doorway
  • Large changes in finished floor level
  • Loose or heavily compressible carpet
  • Deep grout joints
  • A threshold gap exceeding 12mm

Where the floor is unsuitable, a smooth threshold plate may be required.

Maximum gap coverage

The NOR820 provides maximum gap coverage of 12mm.

The actual threshold gap permitted on a particular door may be lower because of:

  • The doorset specification
  • Smoke-control requirements
  • Fire-door evidence
  • Accessibility requirements
  • The condition of the floor
  • The available actuator adjustment

The finished gap should be measured at several positions across the door opening before selecting and installing the seal.

Acoustic performance

The NOR820 has been acoustically tested in accordance with BS EN ISO 10140-2.

The individual product does not have a universal standalone decibel rating.

Any numerical sound-reduction result depends on the complete tested door assembly, including:

  • The mass and construction of the door leaf
  • The door frame
  • The seals around the head and jambs
  • The threshold surface
  • The adjustment of the PVC gasket
  • Glazing and ironmongery
  • The frame-to-wall junction
  • The quality of installation

A drop seal should therefore be treated as one component within a complete acoustic doorset.

Smoke-sealing performance

Norseal states that the NOR820 meets the smoke requirements of BS 8214.

Associated smoke-seal documentation also refers to testing of automatic threshold seals in accordance with BS 476-31.1.

For effective smoke control, the PVC gasket must make continuous contact with a firm threshold surface when the door closes.

The complete doorset may also require:

  • Smoke seals around the head and jambs
  • Sealed glazing systems
  • Protected letter plates and air-transfer grilles
  • Correctly detailed locks and latches
  • A sealed frame-to-wall junction

Use on fire doors

The NOR820 is face-fixed and does not normally require removal of door-core material.

Norseal states that fitting the NOR820 is not detrimental to the door’s fire-resistance performance where the seal is surface-mounted without removing core material.

This does not mean that the NOR820 independently provides a fire-resistance rating.

Before installation on a fire door, confirm:

  • That surface-mounted automatic drop seals are permitted
  • That the proposed screw-fixing positions are acceptable
  • That no door-core material will be removed
  • That the seal will not interfere with required ironmongery
  • That the finished threshold gap complies with the doorset evidence
  • That the smoke-sealing arrangement is appropriate

The current Norseal product page links to CF629 documentation. The linked certificate revision states a validity date ending on 13 January 2024, so current certification status should be confirmed before relying on that certificate for a new specification.

Suitable for timber and metal doors

The NOR820 is designed for surface fixing to:

  • Timber door leaves
  • Metal door leaves
  • Existing acoustic doors
  • Suitable smoke-control doors
  • Suitable fire-resisting doors

The door face must provide a stable surface capable of accepting the supplied screw fixings.

Inside- or outside-face installation

The NOR820 can be fitted to either the inward or outward face of a suitable door.

The measurement and actuator contact arrangement differ depending on which face is selected.

The manufacturer’s fitting guide specifies:

  • Inside face: measure between the two door stops and subtract 7mm.
  • Outside face: measure between the actuator contact-screw position and the hanging-side edge of the door, then subtract 2mm.

The correct measurement method must be selected before the seal or cover plate is cut.

Clip-on aluminium cover plate

The NOR820 includes a satin-silver aluminium cover plate.

The cover plate:

  • Conceals the screw fixings
  • Protects the internal mechanism
  • Provides a smooth finished appearance
  • Can be removed when the mechanism requires access

Both the seal body and cover plate must be shortened to the same finished length.

Grey PVC gasket

The retractable sealing element is manufactured from grey PVC.

The gasket provides:

  • Flexible contact with the floor or threshold
  • A continuous sealing surface beneath the closed door
  • Retraction when the door opens
  • Compatibility with the internal drop mechanism

Keep the gasket free from:

  • Cuts and tears
  • Paint and varnish
  • Adhesive contamination
  • Metal swarf
  • Accumulated floor debris

Suitable threshold surfaces

The NOR820 can close against a suitable:

  • Smooth finished floor
  • Door sill
  • Low-profile threshold plate
  • Level flooring transition

A threshold plate may improve sealing where the existing floor is:

  • Carpeted
  • Uneven
  • Worn
  • Interrupted by grout joints
  • Formed from different flooring materials
  • Too soft to provide reliable gasket contact

Complete the final actuator adjustment only after the finished floor or threshold plate has been installed.

Available lengths

The NOR820 is available in the following standard lengths:

  • 400mm
  • 500mm
  • 600mm
  • 700mm
  • 800mm
  • 900mm
  • 1000mm
  • 1100mm
  • 1200mm

Select the closest suitable length that can be shortened to the required measurement without exceeding its cut-back allowance.

Cut-back limits

The NOR820 can be shortened from its non-actuator end.

The manufacturer states:

  • 400mm length — maximum cut-back of 130mm.
  • 500mm to 1200mm lengths — maximum cut-back of 125mm.

Always check the individual product label before cutting.

Cutting beyond the permitted limit can damage the internal mechanism and prevent the seal from operating.

NOR820 or NOR810?

The NOR820 is a surface-mounted retrofit seal.

The NOR810 is a concealed rebated seal installed within a 14 × 35mm groove along the bottom edge of the door.

Choose the NOR820 where:

  • Routing is not practical
  • The existing door should not be machined
  • A metal door is being sealed
  • A faster retrofit installation is required
  • A visible satin-silver cover profile is acceptable

Choose a rebated seal only where the door construction and doorset evidence permit the necessary machining.

Typical applications

The NOR820 can be used within suitable doorsets in:

  • Hotels and guest accommodation
  • Schools and universities
  • Hospitals and healthcare facilities
  • Care homes
  • Offices and meeting rooms
  • Apartment developments

Inside-Face Measurement

Where the NOR820 is fitted to the inside face of the door:

  • Measure the distance between the two door stops.
  • Record this measurement as X.
  • Calculate the required seal length as L = X − 7mm.

Outside-Face Measurement

Where the NOR820 is fitted to the outside face of the door:

  • Identify the final position of the actuator contact screw.
  • Measure between that position and the hanging-side edge of the door.
  • Record this measurement as X.
  • Calculate the required seal length as L = X − 2mm.

Acoustic Performance Note

The NOR820 has been acoustically tested in accordance with BS EN ISO 10140-2.

No universal standalone decibel rating should be assigned to the individual seal.

Final sound reduction depends on:

  • The door-leaf construction
  • The frame
  • The perimeter seals
  • The threshold surface
  • The gasket adjustment
  • The glazing and ironmongery
  • The frame-to-wall junction
  • The installation quality

Smoke Performance Note

The NOR820 meets the smoke requirements of BS 8214 within suitable complete doorset arrangements.

The gasket must make continuous threshold contact when the door is closed.

Compatible smoke seals will normally also be required around the door head and jambs.

Fire-Door Performance Note

The NOR820 does not contain intumescent material and does not provide an independent fire-resistance period.

Its principal fire-door advantage is that it can be face-fixed without removing core material.

Before installation on a fire door:

  • Confirm that the product is permitted by the doorset evidence.
  • Do not route or cut into the door core.
  • Use suitable screw-fixing positions.
  • Do not interfere with hinges, locks or other required hardware.
  • Maintain the specified threshold gap.
  • Confirm the current status of any certification being relied upon.

Handling and Storage

Store the NOR820:

  • Flat and fully supported
  • In a clean and dry location
  • With the aluminium cover plate protected from scratches
  • With the actuator protected from damage
  • With the PVC gasket protected from cutting and crushing
  • Away from timber dust, metal swarf and wet trades

Do not allow debris to enter the internal drop mechanism.

Before You Start

Inspect the door, frame and threshold.

Confirm that:

  • The door opens, closes and latches correctly
  • The hinges and frame are secure
  • The door face can accept screw fixings
  • The threshold gap does not exceed 12mm
  • The floor provides a suitable sealing surface
  • The seal will not interfere with a kick plate or other hardware
  • The chosen inward- or outward-face installation is practical
  • The installation is permitted by any applicable fire-door evidence

Do not drill into concealed wiring, glazing, reinforcement or other door components.

Step 1: Select the Installation Face

Decide whether the NOR820 will be fitted to the:

  • Inside face — the side where the seal is positioned between the door stops when the door closes.
  • Outside face — the opposite face, requiring a separate actuator contact-screw position.

The chosen position determines the required finished seal length.

Step 2A: Measure for an Inside-Face Installation

Measure the clear distance between the two door stops.

Record this dimension as X.

Calculate the required seal length using:

L = X − 7mm

For example:

  • If the clear distance between the stops is 827mm, the required seal length is 820mm.

Record measurement L for cutting.

Step 2B: Measure for an Outside-Face Installation

Identify the final position of the actuator contact screw or plate.

Measure between that contact position and the hanging-side edge of the door.

Record this dimension as X.

Calculate the required seal length using:

L = X − 2mm

For example:

  • If the measured distance is 822mm, the required seal length is 820mm.

Record measurement L for cutting.

Step 3: Confirm the Cut-Back Allowance

Compare the required finished length with the supplied product.

The permitted maximum cut-back is:

  • 400mm seal — 130mm.
  • 500mm to 1200mm seals — 125mm.

Check the individual product label before cutting.

Do not shorten the seal beyond the marked limit.

Step 4: Identify the Actuator End

Identify the end containing the actuator mechanism.

All measurements should be taken from the actuator end.

The excess material is removed from the opposite end.

Before cutting, reconfirm:

  • The actuator end
  • The non-actuator cutting end
  • The calculated finished length
  • The permitted cut-back

Do not cut through the actuator mechanism.

Step 5: Mark the Seal and Cover Plate

Measure dimension L from the actuator end.

Mark the finished length on both:

  • The aluminium drop-seal body
  • The aluminium clip-on cover plate

Both components must finish at the same length.

Check the marks before cutting.

Step 6: Remove the Cover Plate

Unclip or slide the aluminium cover plate away from the main seal body.

Set it aside carefully to protect the satin-silver finish.

Do not bend or twist the cover profile.

Step 7: Protect the PVC Gasket

Withdraw or move the flexible PVC gasket away from the cutting line.

Move enough gasket clear so that it cannot be damaged by the saw.

Do not:

  • Stretch the gasket excessively
  • Cut the gasket at the same time as the aluminium
  • Damage the inner carrier
  • Allow metal swarf to enter the mechanism

Step 8: Cut the Aluminium Components

Support the seal body and cover plate securely.

Cut both aluminium sections squarely at the marked position using a fine-tooth saw.

After cutting:

  • File the cut edges smooth
  • Remove all sharp burrs
  • Remove all aluminium swarf
  • Check that the cover plate still fits the body
  • Confirm that the internal mechanism operates freely

Rough edges may cause the cover plate or gasket to catch during operation.

Step 9: Replace and Trim the Gasket

Return the PVC gasket to its normal position within the inner carrier.

Trim the excess gasket cleanly using a sharp knife.

Do not stretch the gasket while trimming, as it may retract and finish too short.

Confirm that it remains:

  • Straight
  • Continuous
  • Free from tears
  • Correctly retained in its carrier

Step 10: Establish the Mounting Height

Hold the seal against the selected door face near the bottom edge.

Position it so that:

  • The gasket can cover the threshold gap when lowered
  • The gasket remains clear of the floor while retracted
  • The housing is straight and level
  • The cover plate will not project below the door unnecessarily
  • The seal will not interfere with the door stop or frame

Do not position the body so low that the gasket drags while the door is open.

Step 11: Mark the Fixing Positions

With the seal held level in its final position, mark the screw-fixing holes onto the door face.

Check that each fixing enters suitable door material.

For metal doors, use fixing methods appropriate to the door construction.

Do not place screws where they could damage:

  • Glazing
  • Internal reinforcement
  • Locks or flush bolts
  • Electrical components
  • Other door hardware

Step 12: Drill the Pilot Holes

Remove the seal and drill suitable pilot holes at the marked positions.

Select the drill size according to:

  • The supplied screws
  • The door material
  • The door manufacturer’s requirements

Remove all drilling debris before fixing the seal.

Step 13: Screw-Fix the Seal Body

Return the NOR820 to its marked position and secure it using the supplied screws.

Tighten the screws evenly.

Do not overtighten them, as this can:

  • Distort the aluminium housing
  • Restrict the drop mechanism
  • Damage the door face
  • Pull the seal out of alignment

Check that the body remains level.

Step 14: Install the Actuator Contact Assembly

Fit the supplied actuator plate, contact screw or corresponding frame component in the position shown by the manufacturer’s guide.

The contact component must align with the seal actuator as the door closes.

For an outside-face installation, its position forms part of the original measurement used to calculate the finished seal length.

Check that:

  • The actuator makes positive contact
  • The door can still close fully
  • The contact does not obstruct the door swing
  • The component is securely fixed

Step 15: Fit the Actuator and Distance Pieces

Fit the actuator stick and any required distance pieces in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

The distance pieces allow the actuator contact position to be adjusted for the door and frame arrangement.

Make sure the actuator is securely clipped into position before testing the door.

Step 16: Fit the Cover Plate

Clip the satin-silver aluminium cover plate over the fixed seal body.

Check that:

  • The cover plate is fully engaged
  • The screw fixings are concealed
  • The cut ends align correctly
  • The plate does not catch the moving gasket
  • No sharp edges remain exposed

Step 17: Test the Initial Operation

Close the door slowly while observing the gasket.

The NOR820 should:

  • Remain retracted while the door is open
  • Begin lowering when the actuator contacts the frame component
  • Reach the floor or threshold as the door closes
  • Make contact across the width of the door
  • Retract when the door opens

Step 18: Adjust the Actuator

Adjust the clip-in actuator progressively by hand.

Open and close the door after each small adjustment.

Continue until the gasket makes light and continuous threshold contact when the door is fully closed.

Do not over-adjust the actuator.

Step 19: Check Gasket Contact

Close the door and inspect the gasket across the complete opening.

Confirm that:

  • The actuator end contacts the threshold
  • The opposite end contacts the threshold
  • The centre contacts the threshold
  • No visible open gaps remain
  • The gasket is not folded sideways
  • The door still closes and latches correctly

Where the floor is too uneven or compressible, install a suitable threshold plate rather than forcing excessive drop from the mechanism.

Step 20: Complete the Final Door Check

Operate the door several times.

Confirm that:

  • The door opens freely
  • The gasket retracts fully
  • The seal does not drag continuously across the floor
  • The door closes completely
  • The latch engages correctly
  • The gasket provides continuous contact
  • The screw fixings remain secure
  • The cover plate remains clipped in position
  • The actuator remains aligned
  • The mechanism does not over-travel

Installing with a Threshold Plate

Where a threshold plate is required, install it before completing the final actuator adjustment.

The threshold plate should:

  • Provide a firm and level sealing surface
  • Extend beneath the full gasket width
  • Remain securely fixed
  • Allow the door to operate freely
  • Meet applicable accessibility requirements

Readjust the NOR820 after completing the final flooring and threshold installation.

Installing with Perimeter Seals

The NOR820 treats only the threshold gap.

Suitable seals will normally also be required around the:

  • Door head
  • Hinge-side jamb
  • Closing-side jamb
  • Meeting stiles on applicable double doors

Use the complete acoustic or smoke-sealing arrangement specified for the doorset.

Installation Tips

  • Decide between inside- and outside-face installation before measuring.
  • For inside installation, use L = X − 7mm.
  • For outside installation, use L = X − 2mm.
  • Take every measurement from the actuator end.
  • Cut only the non-actuator end.
  • Check the product-label cut-back limit.
  • Cut the seal body and cover plate to the same length.
  • Protect the PVC gasket while cutting.
  • File all aluminium edges smooth.
  • Remove all metal swarf from the mechanism.
  • Mount the body straight and level.
  • Use all required screw fixings.
  • Align the actuator and frame contact carefully.
  • Adjust the actuator progressively.
  • Do not over-compress the PVC gasket.
  • Check that the door continues to close and latch correctly.

Maintenance Advice

Inspect and operate the NOR820 regularly as part of the door-maintenance programme.

Check for:

  • Loose fixing screws
  • Movement of the seal body
  • A loose or damaged cover plate
  • Damage to the PVC gasket
  • Damage or misalignment at the actuator
  • Debris beneath the gasket
  • Failure of the gasket to retract
  • Loss of contact with the threshold
  • Excessive gasket compression
  • Changes in door alignment
  • Failure of the door to close or latch

Clean the gasket and threshold using a soft cloth and a suitable mild cleaning product.

Do not apply unapproved oil, grease or lubricant to the internal mechanism.

Important Performance Note

Correct measuring, cutting, positioning, fixing and actuator adjustment are essential to the operation of the NOR820.

The product does not independently create an acoustically rated, smoke-control or fire-resisting door.

Final performance depends on:

  • The construction of the door leaf
  • The door frame
  • The perimeter sealing system
  • The threshold surface
  • The adjustment of the PVC gasket
  • The ironmongery and glazing
  • The surrounding wall construction
  • The quality of installation and maintenance

For fire-resisting or certified doorsets, install the NOR820 only in accordance with the applicable test evidence, assessment and door-manufacturer instructions.

The standard parcel service time scale is an estimated 2-7 working days.

We have Next Day, Specific Day and Saturday options, which you can choose at the time of placing your order (UK mainland only).

Each item will be carefully packaged and distributed to our courier after being dispatched from our warehouse.

You can collect your order from our store. At checkout select "Local Pickup". We will notify you when your order is ready for collection.

Some postcodes are classed as remote by our delivery partners. If your address falls within one of these areas, additional delivery charges may apply.

  • Highlands and Islands
  • Parts of Scotland
  • Isle of Man
  • Northern Ireland
  • Remote rural postcodes

Delivery & Returns FAQs

If you are not home when delivery is attempted, the courier will usually leave a card or contact you with the next steps.

Depending on the courier and service used, they may attempt re-delivery, leave the parcel in a safe place, or take it back to the depot.

For pallet deliveries, someone normally needs to be available to accept the goods, as these are delivered kerbside and cannot usually be left unattended.

If you need to make a change to your order, please contact us as soon as possible after placing it.

We can usually make changes before the order has been processed or dispatched, but once it has entered production, packing, or shipping, changes may no longer be possible.

Our team will let you know what can be amended and whether any additional charges apply.

If an item is currently out of stock, please contact us to check availability.

Some products can still be ordered on a lead time basis, while others may be temporarily unavailable from the supplier.

We will advise you on the expected timescale and whether a suitable alternative is available.

In some cases, parcel deliveries may be left with a neighbour if you have given delivery instructions and the courier allows it.

Pallet deliveries are less flexible, as they usually require the goods to be accepted in person at the delivery address.

If you would like delivery left with a neighbour where possible, please let us know in advance and we will note this on the order.

Please note:
  • Delivery times are estimates and may vary depending on stock, courier availability, order size, and your postcode.

  • Remote areas may incur additional delivery charges or longer delivery times.
  • Please check your order on arrival and report any damage or missing items as soon as possible.
