3.5 × 50mm Fine-Thread Drywall Screws – Box of 1000

3.5 × 50mm Fine-Thread Drywall Screws are phosphate-finished carbon-steel fixings designed for securing plasterboard to compatible light-gauge metal drywall and ceiling-track systems.

The screws combine a sharp 25-degree piercing point with a 60-degree twin thread, allowing them to penetrate plasterboard and engage with thin metal framing quickly. A bugle-shaped head spreads pressure gradually across the board surface and creates a shallow recess for jointing compound.

Each box contains 1,000 screws and one compatible PH2 S2 driver bit.

For Light-Gauge Metal Framing

The fine-thread design is intended for fixing plasterboard to compatible drywall studs and ceiling-track sections with a maximum supported metal thickness of 0.6mm.

Typical applications include:

  • Plasterboard fixed to light-gauge metal studs
  • Plasterboard fixed to ceiling-track systems
  • Internal drywall partitions
  • Suspended plasterboard ceilings
  • Wall-lining systems using thin metal framing

Fine-thread drywall screws should not automatically be used as timber-stud screws. A compatible coarse-thread drywall screw is normally selected where plasterboard is fixed directly to timber framing.

60-Degree Twin Thread

The screw incorporates a fine 60-degree twin thread designed to provide rapid insertion and effective engagement within compatible thin sheet metal.

The twin-thread arrangement advances efficiently as the screw is driven, while the fine pitch provides multiple points of contact within the metal framing.

This helps provide:

  • Fast installation into light-gauge steel
  • Consistent engagement with the framing
  • Secure restraint of the plasterboard
  • Controlled driving using a drywall screw gun
  • Reliable pull-out performance within the supported substrate range

Sharp Piercing Point

The 25-degree sharp point is designed to pierce the plasterboard facing and enter compatible metal framing without a separate pilot hole.

The screw should be positioned square to the board and directly over the supporting framing. Firm, controlled pressure allows the point to penetrate the metal before the thread engages.

Do not use the screw where the combined metal thickness exceeds 0.6mm. Thicker steel may require a self-drilling drywall screw with an integrated drill point.

Bugle Head

The bugle head has a gradual curved profile designed to pull into the plasterboard surface without applying an abrupt cutting force to the paper facing.

When driven to the correct depth, the head:

  • Holds the plasterboard firmly against the frame
  • Creates a shallow recess for jointing compound
  • Helps reduce damage to the board paper
  • Leaves no projecting metal above the finished surface

The head should finish slightly below the paper surface without tearing completely through it. An overdriven screw may lose much of its ability to restrain the board.

Phillips PH2 Drive

The screws use a Phillips No. 2 recess and are supplied with one compatible PH2 S2 driver bit.

A correctly fitting driver helps transfer torque positively while maintaining control as the head approaches its final depth.

A drywall screw gun or depth-setting attachment is recommended for repetitive installation because it allows each screw to be seated consistently.

Fully Threaded Construction

The screw is fully threaded, with a nominal thread length of 45mm.

The continuous thread provides engagement along the working portion of the fixing and helps secure the plasterboard against the metal framing.

The 50mm length must still be checked against the complete board build-up. It may be suitable for thicker boards or certain layered constructions, but the specified penetration into the framing must always be maintained.

Phosphate-Finished Carbon Steel

The screws are manufactured from hardened carbon steel and supplied with a dark grey or black phosphate finish.

The finish provides protection suitable for normal clean, dry internal environments. It is not equivalent to an exterior-grade coating or stainless steel.

Do not use these screws where they will be exposed to:

  • External weather
  • Persistent condensation
  • Continuously damp conditions
  • Marine or salt-laden environments
  • Aggressive chemicals
  • Applications requiring a higher corrosion classification

Fire and Acoustic Systems

The screws are manufactured to the applicable drywall-fixing standard and have an A1 reaction-to-fire classification. This does not give an individual screw or plasterboard sheet a stated fire-resistance period.

Fire and acoustic performance belongs to the complete tested, classified or assessed construction, including:

  • The metal stud and track system
  • The framing gauge and centres
  • The plasterboard type and thickness
  • The number of board layers
  • The screw length and fixing centres
  • The cavity insulation
  • The joint and perimeter treatment
  • Service penetrations and openings

How to Install 3.5 × 50mm Fine-Thread Drywall Screws

Install the screws according to the plasterboard and drywall-framing system instructions. The required screw centres, board-edge distances and penetration depend on the complete wall or ceiling construction.

1. Verify the Framing

Confirm that:

  • The board is being fixed to compatible metal framing.
  • The framing thickness does not exceed 0.6mm.
  • The 50mm screw length is suitable for the complete board build-up.
  • The required screw centres are known.
  • The construction does not require a self-drilling screw for thicker steel.

2. Inspect the Framework

Check that the studs or ceiling tracks are correctly positioned, securely fixed and free from excessive distortion.

All required board edges must be supported in accordance with the drywall-system design.

3. Position the Plasterboard

Offer the board to the framing and hold it flat in its final position.

Ensure that:

  • The board edges align with the supporting frame.
  • The required perimeter gaps are maintained.
  • Board joints follow the specified layout.
  • The board is not bowed or damaged.
  • The fixing positions are clear of concealed services.

4. Fit the PH2 Driver Bit

Fit the supplied PH2 S2 bit into a drywall screw gun or suitable variable-speed driver.

A depth-setting nosepiece is recommended for controlling the final position of the bugle head.

5. Position the Screw

Hold the screw square to the plasterboard surface and directly over the metal stud or track.

Maintain the board manufacturer’s required distance from cut edges, tapered edges and board corners.

6. Pierce the Framing

Apply firm axial pressure and drive at a controlled speed.

The sharp point should pass through the board and pierce the thin metal framing before the fine thread begins to engage.

Stop where the screw fails to penetrate. Do not apply excessive uncontrolled force, as the framing may be thicker than the supported 0.6mm limit.

7. Seat the Bugle Head

Continue driving until the bugle head sits slightly beneath the board surface.

The correctly installed head should:

  • Hold the board firmly against the framing
  • Create a shallow recess for jointing compound
  • Leave the surrounding paper substantially intact
  • Remain below the final finished surface

Do not drive the head through the paper facing or deeply into the gypsum core.

8. Replace Failed Fixings

Where a screw misses the framing, spins without tightening or tears through the board paper, install a replacement fixing into sound material nearby.

Do not reuse a damaged hole. Maintain the required distance from the failed fixing and the board edge.

9. Maintain the Specified Centres

Continue fixing the board using the screw centres required by the particular partition, lining or ceiling system.

Wall, ceiling, fire-rated and acoustic constructions may use different fixing centres. Do not apply a generic spacing where system performance is required.

10. Multi-Layer Systems

Where more than one plasterboard layer is installed:

  • Use the specified screw length for each layer.
  • Stagger joints where required.
  • Follow the base-layer and face-layer fixing centres.
  • Ensure the screw reaches and engages with the metal framing.

A 50mm screw is not suitable for every multi-layer build-up. Confirm the required length from the system specification.

11. Complete the Final Inspection

Before jointing, confirm that:

  • Every screw has engaged with the framing.
  • No head projects above the board surface.
  • No head has torn completely through the paper.
  • The board is held flat against the framework.
  • The correct fixing centres have been maintained.
  • The board joints and perimeter gaps remain correctly formed.

12. Finish the Screw Heads

Cover correctly recessed screw heads using the jointing compound specified for the plasterboard system.

Do not rely on jointing compound to correct loose, protruding or overdriven screws.

Important Environmental Note

These phosphate-finished screws are intended for clean, dry internal environments.

Use an appropriately corrosion-resistant fixing where the construction will be exposed to persistent moisture, exterior weather or aggressive conditions.

Important Performance Note

The screw does not independently provide acoustic or fire resistance.

The completed performance depends on the framing, board layers, insulation, fixing centres, joint treatment, perimeter sealing and installation quality.

If you are not home when delivery is attempted, the courier will usually leave a card or contact you with the next steps.

Depending on the courier and service used, they may attempt re-delivery, leave the parcel in a safe place, or take it back to the depot.

For pallet deliveries, someone normally needs to be available to accept the goods, as these are delivered kerbside and cannot usually be left unattended.
