PhoneStar Sealing Tape – 50m × 50mm
PhoneStar Sealing Tape is a high-tack kraft paper tape designed for sealing cut and exposed edges on PhoneStar DBx and SBx acoustic boards.
PhoneStar boards contain a dense silica-sand core enclosed by a cardboard facing. When a board is cut, the exposed edge must be sealed to prevent the core material from escaping during handling, installation and the service life of the completed soundproofing system.
The 50mm-wide tape wraps around the cut edge and bonds to the cardboard faces on both sides of the board. This creates a durable closure that helps retain the sand filling and preserve the mass of the acoustic panel.
Designed for PhoneStar Acoustic Boards
The tape is intended for use with compatible PhoneStar board products, including:
- PhoneStar DBx acoustic boards
- PhoneStar SBx acoustic boards
- Other compatible cardboard-faced PhoneStar boards where the installation guidance specifies edge-sealing tape
It is primarily used after a board has been cut to fit around walls, floors, ceilings, corners, door openings or other building details.
Helps Prevent Silica-Sand Leakage
The acoustic performance of a PhoneStar board depends partly on its dense, sand-filled construction.
An unsealed cut edge can allow the silica-sand core to escape. This may:
- Reduce the mass of the board
- Create gaps within the internal filling
- Make the board difficult to handle cleanly
- Allow loose material to enter the surrounding construction
- Compromise the consistency of the completed acoustic system
Sealing the exposed edge immediately after cutting helps contain the filling and maintain the board in its intended condition.
High-Tack Adhesive
The tape uses a strong adhesive backing developed to bond to the cardboard-facing material used on PhoneStar boards.
When applied to a clean and dry surface, the adhesive helps:
- Hold the tape firmly against the board faces
- Keep the tape wrapped around the exposed edge
- Resist lifting during board handling
- Maintain the seal after the board has been installed
- Reduce the risk of loose sand escaping from the cut edge
The adhesive bond depends on correct surface preparation. Dust, loose cardboard fibres, silica sand and moisture should be removed before the tape is applied.
50mm Wrap-Around Width
The 50mm width allows the tape to cover the exposed board edge while extending onto both cardboard faces.
For a centred application, the tape should be folded evenly over the edge so that approximately half of its width bonds to each face of the board.
This wrap-around arrangement provides a more secure closure than applying a narrow strip only to the exposed end.
Kraft Paper Construction
The kraft paper backing is compatible with the paper and cardboard construction of the PhoneStar board faces.
Its flexible construction allows the tape to:
- Follow straight cut edges
- Fold around the board thickness
- Conform to minor surface variations
- Be cut to length using standard hand tools
- Remain discreet within the completed board installation
The tape is an edge-sealing accessory and is not intended to provide a decorative exposed finish.
50-Metre Roll
Each roll contains 50 metres of sealing tape, providing enough material for numerous board cuts during a soundproofing installation.
The precise number of boards covered depends on:
- The dimensions of each cut edge
- The number of cuts made to each board
- The amount of overlap used at tape joints
- Whether one edge or several edges require sealing
- Installation waste and damaged sections
A 50-metre roll can seal more than 50 individual cut edges where each edge is shorter than approximately one metre. It should not be assumed to seal the complete perimeter of more than 50 boards.
Simple Installation
The tape can be installed using common hand tools and does not require specialist application equipment.
The normal process is to:
- Cut the PhoneStar board to size
- Remove loose sand and dust from the exposed edge
- Cut the tape to the required length
- Centre it over the edge
- Fold it onto both faces of the board
- Apply firm pressure along the complete taped area
Preserves the Board Rather Than Adding Performance
PhoneStar Sealing Tape does not have a standalone sound-reduction rating.
Its role is to maintain the physical condition of the cut acoustic board by retaining the silica-sand filling.
The sound insulation achieved by the completed installation depends on the complete construction, including:
- The PhoneStar board type
- The number and orientation of board layers
- The supporting wall, floor or ceiling structure
- Mechanical fixings and adhesives
- Joint staggering
- Perimeter isolation
- Acoustic sealant
- The absence of gaps and rigid sound paths
Not a Substitute for Acoustic Sealant
The tape seals exposed board edges to contain the internal filling. It does not replace the acoustic sealant or joint treatment required around the perimeter of the complete wall, floor or ceiling system.
Where the installation instructions require acoustic sealant at junctions, gaps or service penetrations, that sealant must still be applied separately.

How to Apply PhoneStar Sealing Tape
Apply PhoneStar Sealing Tape immediately after cutting a compatible PhoneStar DBx or SBx acoustic board and before the board is moved extensively or installed.
Prompt sealing reduces the opportunity for the silica-sand filling to escape from the exposed edge.
1. Plan and Mark the Board Cut
Measure the installation area and mark the PhoneStar board carefully.
Before cutting, confirm:
- The required finished board dimensions
- The orientation of the board within the acoustic system
- The position of board joints and supporting structure
- The location of sockets, pipes and other services
- Which cut edges will require sealing
2. Prepare a Suitable Work Area
Place the board on a stable, supported work surface.
Use appropriate personal protective equipment and follow the board manufacturer’s cutting and safety guidance.
Keep the tape close to the cutting area so the exposed edge can be sealed without unnecessary board movement.
3. Cut the PhoneStar Board
Cut the board using the method recommended for the particular PhoneStar product.
Support both sides of the cut to avoid:
- Tearing the cardboard facing
- Crushing the board edge
- Allowing the cut section to fall
- Spilling unnecessary amounts of the silica-sand filling
4. Keep the Cut Edge Controlled
After cutting, keep the exposed edge level where practical.
Avoid turning, shaking or carrying the board before the edge has been sealed, as this may allow additional core material to escape.
5. Remove Loose Material
Carefully remove loose silica sand and cutting dust from:
- The exposed edge
- The front cardboard face beside the cut
- The rear cardboard face beside the cut
Use a suitable soft brush, clean dry cloth or controlled vacuum method.
Do not apply the tape over a loose layer of sand because the adhesive must contact the cardboard board faces.
6. Inspect the Cut Edge
Check that:
- The cardboard faces remain securely attached.
- The edge is not excessively crushed.
- No large void has formed within the sand core.
- The board remains suitable for installation.
A badly damaged board should be assessed before attempting to repair it with sealing tape.
7. Measure the Tape
Measure a length of tape sufficient to cover the complete exposed edge.
Allow a small additional length where an overlap or folded end is required.
Cut the tape cleanly using suitable scissors or a sharp knife on a protected cutting surface.
8. Centre the Tape Over the Edge
Position the 50mm-wide tape centrally over the exposed edge.
Align it so that a similar width will fold onto each face of the board.
Avoid placing the full width on only one face, as this will leave the opposite side of the cut insufficiently secured.
9. Bond the Tape to the First Face
Press one side of the tape firmly onto the first cardboard face.
Work progressively along the edge to prevent:
- Wrinkles
- Air pockets
- Uneven alignment
- Loose sections
10. Fold the Tape Around the Edge
Fold the tape tightly around the exposed board edge.
Apply firm pressure along the fold so the kraft backing follows the board profile and closes over the silica-sand core.
11. Bond the Second Face
Press the remaining tape width onto the opposite cardboard face.
Smooth it firmly from the centre towards the outer edge.
Check that the adhesive makes continuous contact with both faces and that no loose sand is trapped beneath the bonded sections.
12. Seal Tape Joints
Where more than one tape length is needed, overlap the ends sufficiently to maintain a continuous closure.
Do not leave gaps between adjacent tape sections.
13. Check the Completed Edge
Inspect the complete taped area and confirm that:
- The exposed sand core is fully enclosed.
- The tape is bonded to both board faces.
- The tape follows the complete length of the cut.
- No section is lifting or wrinkled.
- No silica sand continues to escape.
14. Reinforce Local Areas Where Necessary
Apply an additional short section of tape where:
- A corner requires extra closure
- Two taped edges meet
- A small local section has lifted
- The first tape length was damaged during handling
Do not build up excessive layers that prevent the board from fitting correctly within the specified construction.
15. Install the Board
Once the tape is firmly bonded, handle and install the board in accordance with the PhoneStar system instructions.
Take care not to scrape the taped edge against the floor, framing or adjacent boards.
16. Complete the Acoustic Construction
Apply the separately specified fixings, joint treatment and perimeter acoustic sealant.
The sealing tape contains the board core but does not replace the other components required for the acoustic wall, floor or ceiling system.
Final Inspection
Before the board is concealed by another layer, check that:
- Every cut PhoneStar edge has been sealed.
- No loose silica sand remains within the work area.
- The tape remains bonded after board positioning.
- The board has retained its intended shape and mass.
- All perimeter and joint treatments follow the system specification.
Important Performance Note
PhoneStar Sealing Tape does not independently provide sound insulation.
It helps maintain the condition and core density of cut PhoneStar boards. The acoustic performance of the completed installation depends on the entire tested or designed construction.
